Well, the Rifle Deer Season here is fast approaching. The Tree Stands are up and ready, Cam pics reveal some nice bucks. I have the 35 Whelen finalized, shooting in the same hole at 100 yds. This Saturday is range day for the 30-06 to give it a final check and check the 300 Rum as I can reach out from one Stand 250-300 yards. Going through the gear this week, loading up some more ammo.

I will be using the 35 Whelen first week of the season as I'm off all week to hunt!

Don, knock 'em dead, man! Rifle season here in AL starts on the 17th. Still have to get a final zero check on a couple of rifles before then, too. So much work in the way of what matters!

dubyam,
Season starts here too the 17th. I'm really anxious this year. I have one Buck on the cam that is 18". I'd like him to meet the 225 AB from the Whelen. Brown will be down if he shows up!

Good Luck, Don!

Our season in Missouri opens this Saturday but I'm afraid it may be a poor one. We've lost a BUNCH of deer to the blue tongue disease caused by the summer drought and reports are that a lot of nice bucks died. I have heard estimates that Missouri might lose as much as 25% of the total population and Nebraska's loss could be as high as 80%.

In my area, there are few reports of nice bucks seen and many of the does are recovering slowly.

Ron,
Hang in there. I belong to a Hunt Lease that had the Blue tongue happen about 3-4 yrs ago. The deer are rebounding now. I have a lot of pics of young bucks 1.5 yrs to 3 yrs old for future shooters. It's encouraging anyway.

Good luck Don. Sounds like the whelen is all set!

RJM, I am in kansas city and the deer here don't seem to have been hit that hard up here. I don't have cameras out, but the does are plentiful. My neighbot has 80 up near bethany and he has found 3 nice bucks dead in his pond. One was a massive nontypical they found in september.

Hi Don, good luck on your up coming Whitetail hunt :). I am looking forward to your report using the 35 Whelen. I am not sure what load you are using for the 225gr. AB but 250 to 300 yards is more that doable for the 35
As usual lots of photos and a good story is always nice.
Have fun, shoot straight & be safe!

Blessings,
Dan

Sask,
My Whelen load is 225 AB, 59.5 RL-15 with CCI200 primer gives me 2677 fps.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Good hunting to those going afield this season.

This week-end is filled with final preparations for the upcoming Tennessee Rifle season opener next Saturday. Today was a morning at the Range. Confirmed the 35-Whelen with 2-shots in one hole at 100 yards again, the 30-06 was shooting just fine too. Then I shot the 300 RUM. Placed 2-shots 3" high at 100 yards 1/2" apart. Was done in 1-hour. Fastest range trip ever for me. Set the last Tree Stand up this afternoon on Public Land, a place to take my Daughter Hunting. Tomorrow afternoon go to the Hunt Lease to pull my Trail Cams, give the 3-Tree stands a final check etc.

This week coming up is time to go through the gear and get ready.

Don

It definitely sounds as if you are dialed in, Don. I wish you every success.

Good luck you have a great load there, looking forward to how it turns out and seeing the pictures.

Thanks, I'll keep you informed if I get that Big Buck.
