The 257 Bee!

A very well written and informative article written by a master rifleman. Thanks for posting, Fotis.

Scotty need to see this in his latest quest for a 257 Bee

Good read ! thks for sharing and that is why i just bought a new Weatherby Vangaurd S2 SS 257 Mag ! RJ

The rifle used in the article? No it was a vanguard S2 24" tube.

After reading that article I wondered about surplus 4831. Lane essentially stated that 4350 was the slowest burning powder available at the time. But I believe that the surplus 4831 showed up on the streets at about that same time? I know my dad and I were shooting it in the 50's, any body else have a take on this?

I have on my computer a Load guide published by Weatherby which shows the use of H4831 in the 257 Bee. I've tried to attach it to a post but the forum won't let me post it as it recognizes it as a copy right infringement.
Any one wanting to look at the load info can send me a pm with there E-mail and I can send it to you.

I have some surplus 4831 still.
A very good friend got it from his High School Shop teacher in the 1960's. Down to 5 pounds of what started as a 55 Gallon drum.

I have a Vanguard 257Bee with a 24" barrel. I have worked with a number of powders for load testing. All shooting was at 100yards with screens at 20'. All were 5 shot groups. I used a sand bag under the forearm and rifle butt in my shoulder only for rear support at a bench. I need to find some Magnum and H-1000 powder to test but this is what I have come up with. so far:
80gr TTSX Barnes-69.5gr IMR4831-3624FPS --SD40
80Gr TTSX-71.5gr RL22--3490FPS--SD12-slightly better group than one above
120gr Swift A-Frame--71.5gr RL25--3241FPS--SD6--Almost cloverleaf group.
100gr Nosler PAR-73gr IMR7828SSC-Lost data but excellent
115gr Nosler PAR-69gr IMR7828SSC-3408FPS--SD45--Taken 4 pronghorns-Excellent performance
100gr Swift Scirroco-71.5gr IMR7828SSC 3595FPS--SD18-5 shot cloverleaf group
100gr Scirroco-75gr RL25--3549FPS--SD37- Not quite as good group as above
100gr Swift A-Frame-72gr IMR7828SSC-3667FPS--SD13
100gr Swift A-Frame-75gr RL25-3476FPS-SD19-slightly better group than one above

These seem to work for me but may not for you. They are all hot hunting loads loads, which is the main reason to use the 257Bee in my mind.

Got a question, what is the OAL for the loads listed with the 115 PT Divern Hunter?

I have more 115 PT's than anything else, and some IMR7828 so I would like to start there..

3.266"-3.27" for the 115gr PAR bullet. The Weatherby have pretty long throats so you can seat the out there. I try to keep the bullet at least to the bottom of the neck to get better tension on the bullet. That is what worked for me even if it is over-lenght according to the Nosler book.

Hope that helps.

Bill, I bought my first 7mm Rem Mag (a Husqvarna) in 1963 while stationed at Fort Lewis and used surplus H-4831 in the round cardboard can at $1.75 a pound during that time period.

Back when Great flood happened, Bill pushed the elk to the Ark to ensure they would make the ride...

Man, you young guys are ruthless. Give us old fellers a break! We've been there! Be glad Bill pushed those elk to the Ark.
