The Winchester zapped a decent little 7pt yesterday morning....

I shot him at about 70 yards, 28 min before sunrise in a dark little hollow. I was blinded by the muzzle flash, lol, and had to wait three long hours to go look for him (outfitter where I'm at asks us not to look for blood till after 10AM, and I shot him at 7:10AM). I couldn't see what happened after the shot, just that he wasn't laying there when the pretty spots faded from my vision.

I found where I shot him, and there was a LOT of hair, several bone fragments, some bits of meat, and some blood. Generally, when I've found such sign, it's from a bad hit and the deer isn't found. I found sparse blood and followed it 40-45 yards to a quite dead deer. The bullet hit half-way top to bottom on the chest and hit tight to the back edge of the leg/shoulder crease. Very clean kill, just not a DRT.

The 150gr BT made two beautiful holes in the rib cage going and coming.

I have till Sat. evening to kill up to two more, so we'll see if I can't zap another one or two.

Congratulations on a very nice animal... My last kill with my .270 was a double lung shot on a walking whitetail doe and she ran about 70 yds. I recall that was with a Sierra 130 gr Handload. Enjoy the remaining hunt.

Congratulations on a dandy buck. The 270 Win did a great job.

Congratulations, Tom. The 270 did what it was supposed to do, and so did the rifleman. Good looking buck.

that's a good shot Tom , sometimes they just don't know they are dead . congratulations on a nice one .

This rifle is special. I hadn't shared this on this particular forum, but here's the deal:

A friend of mine who is on this forum but doesn't post much was diagnosed with a very serious health issue. As he revealed this and it was discussed, I recalled his friendly teasing back and forth with me regarding the age-old 270 vs 30-06 debate. He's a 270 fan and I am, of course, a 30-06 fan. It's been a long-running friendly banter with us, so when he discussed his medical issue, I said, "when you're better, I'll hunt with 270."

I then traded one of my 2 M1 Garands to acquire this pre64 M70 in 270.

Scotty hooked me up with bullets, and I set to work to get the rifle prepared.

We found out about a month ago that, while not out of the woods, my friend is hopefully in the home stretch with his medical issue, and this was my way of making good on my promise.

After killing the deer, I had thought of switching to my 264wm or 300wsm, both of which I have with me, but I decided to stick with the 270. Just seems appropriate.

I appreciate the thoughtful tribute, Tom. All the best to your friend.

Tom, nothing wrong with the old 270win  using in support of a best friend makes it very special!!
Thank you for the photos & the posting!!

Blessings,
Dan

Congrats on the deer.

Like your friend, I am too in the 270 camp. I LOVE mine.

And congrats to your friends continued improvement. Praying that he will continue to get better so the 30-06/270 banter can continue. ;)

A better picture of the first deer:

And yesterday morning, we got deer #2 with the 270--

150 yard shot, quartering away; I hit him slightly farther back than intended, but was a vital hit. 65-70 yard run with a modest blood trail, but easily enough recovered once I picked up the start of the trail.
