The 6.5 Bee

Mr. Snow has presented a laudable write up of this rifle. The cartridge is interesting. I would think that following the 26 Nosler would ensure a steep hill to climb for dominance, as the first in a given series has a natural advantage. Still, John Snow speaks highly of the rifle and the cartridge will find a place in the hearts of a certain band of shooters.

The 6.5 X 300 in anything would be a very interesting calibre it should definitely be flat not sure of barrel life !
A few years back the young Smith at Rocky Mountain Rifle was building a 6.5 X 300wsm for himself as he was building my 35 Whelen, I am not sure how it turned out but I think DrMike may know that answer :) .
I am sure Fotis that you will want to give that new Bee a testing for sure (y).

Blessings,
Dan

Interesting write up- I must admit that discussion barrel life on a hunting rifle is a little bit interesting.

I know very few hunters that could manage to burn out a barrel- even one so overbore as this one is. I know that starting my 10th year hunting with the same rifle, the bore may be the most pristine part left one the rifle!

I actually find this a little bit funny.

When I wanted to get a 244 H & H to go with my 275, 300 and 375, I was told what a terrible idea it was as it would burn out the barrel to fast. But everybody thinks the 26 Nosler and 6.5 Bee is the cats meow.

Thank god my grandfather did not listen to the naysayers!

What is the barrel life on the 26 Nosler and 6.5 Bee ? ( and does anyone who wants one, care )

People who are pursuing velocity aren't usually put off by a threat of shorter barrel life, Cheyenne. When building a rifle, others may not have considered how many rounds a barrel will provide with a given chambering. Still others in pursuit of accuracy, will pull what many consider to be a good barrel because of throat erosion. We are all individuals and we each have our own parameters that dictate what we want and what we will accept. Even high-stepping cartridges can produce longer barrel life if the one shooting doesn't allow the barrel to get too hot and keeps carbon build-up from the throat.

I've seen estimates of 1500....although I'm sure someone dedicated to the mission could burn one out much quicker.

By my quick estimate, a "50 rounds a year hunter" (which is more than most of them actually shoot a high powered rifle) could squeeze 30 years out of a barrel.

Even at 800 rounds of useful barrel life, which is pretty pessimistic- yields 16 years.

No one interested in a screaming 6.5 is going to care one bit about burning out a barrel every decade or so.

Just for kicks.... here is a barrel life calculator you can use to estimate "accurate" barrel life using bore, powder charge, powder "heat", and some other factors.

http://www.accurateshooter.com/technical-articles/excel-formula-predicts-useful-barrel-life/

I ran a couple of numbers and was really surprised.
My pet load for my .300WSM is rated at 1500 rounds.
A book max load for the 26NOS is only 578....

Both of those are short enough it may be pretty conservative on the accuracy side for benchrest types... lots of those guys will toss a rifle that would shoot fantastic for hunting use.

Probably a good way to estimate what "might" happen.

It sounds like a beast of a cartridge. Built on Wby's MK5 will allow the long 140-142's to be seated out where they belong vs pushed way down in the powder column like 3.34" 26 Nosler on a 3.4" magazine. Not sure I'd ever build one but like the others said, for a hunting rifle, it would be something with those 160 Woodleighs or 156 Oryxs.

What rifles are Weatherby chambering it in? Seems like it would be real cool on their Ultralight platform.

To quote the GREAT Elmer Keith, "To heck with efficiency, it's performance we want!". And I so concur!

How many members here have an inefficient calibered rifle and how many barrels have you swapped over how many years?

0. I believe I would bored with something long before I wore it out.

Fotis, I use a 348 and 244 H & H. I might win the prize for stupid In fact I am not even sure the 348 gets into the performance part of equation at least when compared to my husbands 340 Weatherby.

Scotty, a quick heads up--more stuff is headed your way for your daughter. Did she like the scarf ? you probably don't have a clue but I will bet you know from memory exactly what rifle she shot last LOL

She did love it...

As for the 348, that sucker is HIGH in performance in my book. Sheer utility of that whomper makes it have performance in spades..

I shot out 1 barrel. Over 5000 rounds through a 30-06.
If I ever wear out the 338 RUM barrel, I will get it rebarreled for another 338 RUM. Love that round.

Waiting for mine from the Custom Shop. One of a kind

I would think you could get way more than 5000 rounds through a 30-06.

My latest is a 308 Win, and I am hoping to get about 50,000 (40,000 of them cast lead) through it before it is worn out.

Nice Fotis can't wait to see the collection complete.

It will be a nice one and guaranteed to be a tack driver by the man himself. Also signed by the man himself :!:

Way to go Fotis. I guess this puts the M70 375 H&H you were going to put on layaway on hold?

Lol. I had to at the $75k price tag
