So yesterday, with a very serious look on his face, my youngest son told me "Dad, we'd better take the bear rifles to the range soon. The season is only a month away."
I thought that was pretty cool. Later today, hopefully between thunderstorms, we're heading to the range with the .30-06 and the .375 H&H. Yeah, the .375 is too big, but that's okay with me. Maybe I'll drag that .300 WSM along with us. Long past time for that thing to earn its keep.
I suspect we'll have a couple of big bore handguns along as well.
Edited after our trip to the range - we both had fun!
Three .45's made their appearance and went through a couple boxes of ammo, both .45 Colt and .45 ACP:
What kick he asked? Shot up some mild ammo loaded by Grandpa:
The young man shot the old .30-06 rifle well, first shot nailed the target, and two quick follow up shots did as well. Of course he was cheating, using the bench and bipod. Youngsters...
And some old fellow was shooting some kind of funny one-at-a-time rifle, but the cartridges were pretty big. It hit every time as well.
A real departure for us, NO .22's were used today! Very strange.
Loads used were:
.45 ACP, 230 gr FMJ factory ammo from Federal & Mag Tech
.45 Colt, 185 gr Speer Gold Dot hollow points over 9 grains of Unique - very mild.
.30-30, 170 gr Rem RNSP over 35 gr BLC2. My usual .30-30 load. Easy shooting.
.30-06, 165 gr Nosler Solid Base soft points, over 58 gr H4350. Our standard '06 load.
.375 H&H, 260 gr Nosler AccuBond, over 69 gr RL-15, accurate and proven afield.
All of it was fun shooting. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the young fellow figure out the single action Ruger revolver. He had never fired a single-action revolver, and really enjoyed it. Particularly liked that it's yet another "familly gun." That means a lot to him, and me.
Regards, Guy
