So yesterday, with a very serious look on his face, my youngest son told me "Dad, we'd better take the bear rifles to the range soon. The season is only a month away."

I thought that was pretty cool. Later today, hopefully between thunderstorms, we're heading to the range with the .30-06 and the .375 H&H. Yeah, the .375 is too big, but that's okay with me. Maybe I'll drag that .300 WSM along with us. Long past time for that thing to earn its keep.

I suspect we'll have a couple of big bore handguns along as well.

Edited after our trip to the range - we both had fun!

Three .45's made their appearance and went through a couple boxes of ammo, both .45 Colt and .45 ACP:

What kick he asked? Shot up some mild ammo loaded by Grandpa:

The young man shot the old .30-06 rifle well, first shot nailed the target, and two quick follow up shots did as well. Of course he was cheating, using the bench and bipod. Youngsters...

And some old fellow was shooting some kind of funny one-at-a-time rifle, but the cartridges were pretty big. It hit every time as well.

A real departure for us, NO .22's were used today! Very strange.

Loads used were:
.45 ACP, 230 gr FMJ factory ammo from Federal & Mag Tech
.45 Colt, 185 gr Speer Gold Dot hollow points over 9 grains of Unique - very mild.

.30-30, 170 gr Rem RNSP over 35 gr BLC2. My usual .30-30 load. Easy shooting.
.30-06, 165 gr Nosler Solid Base soft points, over 58 gr H4350. Our standard '06 load.
.375 H&H, 260 gr Nosler AccuBond, over 69 gr RL-15, accurate and proven afield.

All of it was fun shooting. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the young fellow figure out the single action Ruger revolver. He had never fired a single-action revolver, and really enjoyed it. Particularly liked that it's yet another "familly gun." That means a lot to him, and me.

Regards, Guy

Yeah, you'll want to have the "bear rifles" ready for the season. In my case, it will help to get out. I've got several new rifles that need some attention so I can carry them this fall.

Guy it always a good day to get out to the range. The three calibers of choice are more than enough for the bear.
Photos & report are always appreciated

Blessings,
Dan

Good luck out there Guy. Sounds like your boy has his priorities straight!

Agreed!

Good luck to you Guy! You and your boy sure did a great job a few years ago on the bears. I'll be after a good fall bear this year as well. I would like to get my STw bloody, but I have been shooting my 375R and 338 WM a good bit lately.

We might have to have a friendly frosty beverage wager on skull size

Guy,

There is no replacement for displacement. The 375 H&H is a dandy bear rifle.
I have shot black bears with 30-06, 35 Whelen and 338 RUM.
I will know in the next week if I drew a tag this year. If I do, the 1895 Guide gun in 45-70 will get the nod.

Well I see you made me eat my words Guy! Nice pictures. Looks like your son really enjoyed himself. Man I tell you that looked like pretty good form with that old guy sitting and shooting that "one timer". 8) Just think a 1A in 30-06 and maybe a 1V in 25-06 (I'd prefer a 1B). or a 1B in 6mm Remington (have to find a used one of those). and you would have your three rifle combo you were looking for!

That thought keeps running through my mind. I REALLY like shooting and hunting with the Ruger, and a lighter-recoiling version for general deer hunting would be just great...

Not right now, but I might be able to set aside some money for one next year. Or maybe I'll sell a couple of seldom-used guns to make room for another Number One. Or maybe two of them...

I'm pretty jacked Guy. I just got the okay from Collin to come out to his place and shoot some 400 and 500 yard stuff. It's not too far from home so it will be really nice. Maybe I can get an AccuBond in water jugs at 400 and 500 yards, and the others in jugs at 500. Then I will be done with my testing. Just shooting at those ranges for groups will be fun.

Nothing like shooting classic guns on a classic day at the range. Anyone who thinks a 375 is too big for a bear has never seen a wounded bear lay waste to everything in his immediate proximity before falling over dead. It looks like fun was had by all.

Scott - that .45 Ruger Blackhawk has two cylinders, .45 Colt and .45 ACP. Also has the brass grip frame, making it pretty unusual. Dad used it time to time for 30 some years and recently gave it to my youngest son, Grandpa to Grandson. I thought that was pretty cool.

He gave a matching .357 mag Blackhawk to my oldest son. Also very cool.

Dad has big ol' paws, hence the Pachmayer grips.

Both of the revolvers have brass grip frames and 4 5/8" barrels. The blue finish is starting to "plum" with age. I think these are 1960's or 1970's guns. Years ago I bought Dad a .22 Single Six in the same barrel length to go along with his Blackhawks. He's in his 80's now and wasn't shooting the bigger Rugers anymore, just the Single Six - so he decided to give the Blackhawks to his grandsons. Pretty cool. The "boys" are very proud of their Rugers.

Well, once again, MI did not grant me a bear tag. They didn't grant me an elk tag either. :(

Jim, come on to Idaho, we can buy them both at the grocery store!

Bummer, Jim. I would think there was a good population of bruins in MI. Any idea what the annual harvest is?
