Friday I took my dad out. He can't get around very good so we mostly took a drive. Had a nice day and saw a pretty 4pt. Mule deer buck with about 6 does and about 25 bighorn sheep total in 3 bunches. Saw three pretty nice rams which was cool. Saturday I took my neighbor out with me or I was going alone. He went just to be there. We saw 50 head of elk on private property from about a mile away on top of the mountain we were on. Saw another group that might have a chance at as they were on or near private ground. There was at least 100 head in this bunch and they were scattered about the hillside for about 400-600 yards feeding. We looked at this closer group just a few minutes more, and when we looked back where this large group was about 1.5 miles away, they had cleared out of the meadow on the hillside and we have no idea where they went. Since they must have been spooked by something and we didn't see which way they went, it really made no sense to try and get into them. My neighbor (non-hunter for now, I'll change that next year!) and I continued down the ridge about a mile and at a little hidden park we snuck up on a cow feeding by the edge of the trees. We got to about 170 yards of her at 11:30 AM and got behind a tree and we bedded down so to speak and watched her just knowing she COULDN'T BE ALONE. We sat there for the next 4.5 hours watching her. After 2.5 hours she fed into the trees right at the edge and laid down I believe. We could not see her and we just knew there had to be more with her. So we sat another 2 hours until we saw her feeding to our left and we moved around the ridge to try and intercept her and whatever might be with her. Never saw her again or anything else. Dark came shortly after. Today I went out by myself and tried one of my different spots again. No tracks and no elk. Had a nice day though and took a couple photo's from Saturday and today.
David.
Rob from Saturday. This is where we watched the cow feeding ALL AFTERNOON with no-one else with her that we could see.
Old mine shaft. Several in this area here and there from early 1900's.
