The good old 7mm's

For a long time I've carried 10+lb guns so the recoil has never been a issue for me. In addition almost every gun I hunt with has a muzzle brake so recoil is nothing in a 7 or .30. I like heavier barrels as they tend to be more accurate and I'll take accuracy over less weight any day (well at least until I can't carry one anymore). My wife shoots my light (7.5lbs) .284 with a brake really well and she is only 125lbs. It kicks about like a .243 without a brake.

Your right in that most people would shoot a 7rm better than a .300wm in a hunting weight rifle because most people only shoot their gun right before hunting season and can't tolerate the additional recoil of the .300wm. I sell a lot of muzzle brakes to people that had to have a .300wm or a .300RUM and then can't shoot them. I even sell brakes to guys with 7mm's.
I put brakes on all my long range rigs mainly because as often as not I'll hunt alone, seeing the impact through the scope is imperative, I've watched the bullet hit, exit and impact the ground through a 20x on almost every deer I've killed at long range, even at 800, 1k, and beyond.

Give me a good 7WSM and I am good for life. 7mm RM applies also.

I have been thinking about the 280 Remington lately, I have always wanted one. Properly loaded to the same chamber pressures of the 270 Win or even the 280 AI it becomes even more impressive. I have been thinking of all sorts of different rounds lately, 7mm RM, 7mm WSM, 270 Wby, 30-06, the 280 gives real good performance with fairly mild recoil plus with something like H4895 it can become a low recoil round for my wife as well if she decides to take up hunting. The more I think about it the more I like it.

I could see myself carrying a gun like this X Bolt Hunter for spring black bear on a pleasant May day or head over to DrMike's area for some deer, moose and elk hunting.

That is a really neat rifle, Gerry. I like the .280, and I've had good success with each of the X-Bolts I've shot. They are pretty decent rifles. The bolt is even on the wrong side, just for you. There are some game animals over here that would enjoy presenting themselves for you to shoot.

7mm fan here. It is my favorite diameter bullet for all big game short of really big scarey stuff in alaska or africa.

7 Rem Mag 160 Partition
280 AI 160 Partition Nosler custom load (for now) hoping to get the 160 AccuBond to shoot once I start loading for it.
My wife is also a big fan of the 7mm. She shot her first deer straight on square in the neck at 352 yards with the 7 Rem Mag. Then, her second deer at 50 yards with her 7mm08 --both this past fall/winter. I didn't fair so well this year but at least she lets me eat her venison. I spent a lot of time being her coach but she soon named me "Professor PITA" and well, it seems now that I got schooled by her.

Neat account, YS, or Professor PITA. Hey, at least she let's you share her venison.

Make that a 280 rem, then your set

That will do nicely also.

Maybe I should have mentioned the 7mm Bee?

Do not want to get kicked out of the club!

I have owned only the 7mm Mauser, .280 Rem and 7mm Rem Mag and only since 1963. Plus, I have only owned two of each with rifles ranging from Model 93 Mauser sporter to custom Mauser. My 7mm Rem Mag has gone boom-flop-DRT once each hunt since the very first shot and a bullet failure in 1962. The 160 gr Partitions have accounted for each kill since. My .280 Rem which my granson just killed 5 hogs with a couple weeks ago (one shot each), plus one BT deer this fall has also killed everything it every was fired at with 140 and 160 gr Partitions. Both rifles shoot sub MOA and will everyday that I can. Best that I can hope for, except for my .270 Win, Pre 64 SG Model 70 of course! However, the .270 is really a 7mm in everything but name anyway.

I was hoping for a 280 years ago with my first LH gun but no one made them so had to choose between the 270 and 30-06 instead, the 30-06 worked great (no surprise there) but it was my second choice. My cousin and a friend both have A Bolt's in 280 and they have done very well for them both from Sitka blacktails to big moose in northern B.C. Looking at the 160 gr AccuBond in particular, the 7mm's become very impressive with it's .531 b.c.

As much as I like the 6.5MM, my love of 7MM never wean. I have two cartridge in the pipeline. One, a target rifle chambered for 284 Winchester (hear that DrMike) and another, a 7WSM hunting rifle.

Yes, I hear you, Rommel. The desire for this cartridge (.284 Winchester) is growing.

I haven't had a .284 Win., but do like the 7mm/.284 caliber. I have had a few .280 AI's over the years, and plan on another in the near future. As of now, I only have the 7BRM, which is an awesome little round, even though it isn't all that speedy. Normally I load 150 gr PT's, but it will run the 160's fast enough for my hunting range's, if I need the extra SD.. I also run single shots, so I'm not limited to magazine restrictions. With that, a somewhat short round like .284 Win. would only shine all the more.
However, if I was looking at something bigger than deer, I would want a little more ooomph provided by the 280 AI or a 7 mm mag.. The 7mm/.284 caliber has little competition when it comes to ballistic capabilities. The .280AI with a long a longer throat, comes fairly close to the Rem Mag. The 7mm/.284 caliber has inherently high BC's like no other caliber, with same design bullet in other caliber's of the same SD. Although I would have to say, if I was ever stuck with just having one rifle, it would be a .30 caliber, and a 30-06 at that.

Scope and mount has been changed, (Sig Zee rings and Nikon Buckmark Scope), but here is my 7BRM,,,,,nice light rig with enough to 3-350yds if need be. Although I have yet to take a big game animal much over 2-250 yds.
In a pinch, I would use the 7BRM with a 160 gr. PT out to 150-200 yds on Elk, maybe abit further. IIRC, it will point blank on a 5" at 250. In comparision, it would be like using the .308 Win. with a 180 gr.. Only energy levels would be a bit different favoring the .308/180. But then energy,,,,well I kinda go with the thoughts that energy expands the bullet, but penetration does the killing.

That little 7WSM will surprise you Gerry. It is a great cartridge. If I had my choice for one 7mm, that would be the one. I like mine quite alot. Easy to load for and carries the mail with 160-175 bullets..

I had some coaxing that brought me around

I know nothing 'bout that! And if anyone says otherwise, I'm innocent.

Uh, I don't know Mike. There was a little birdy somewhere? Hmmmmmm.... Innocent isn't exactly the word I would use..

I ain't never coaxed anyone. I may have suggested, recommended, pointed out the deficits arising from failure to own a particular cartridge and the benefits of said cartridge; but I have never "coaxed."

Verbage I guess. I probably misinterpreted the signals you were putting out? :p

My wife says I do it all the time...

Now, not to get off subject, but this whole topic was made for you Mike. Have you started the 284 Winchester yet?
