First of all for any of those who served then thank you. I was sitting here talking to my mother-in-law , she worked at Boeing's at the end of the war. I've learned you can identify old time Seattle people because they reference Boeing in the singular possessive. (Not certain that is correct, I still have nightmares involving Sister Mary Margaret and English class). In any event I was complaining about ammo shortages and she started talking about the war effort at home. Made me think about how many tanks, B17 bombers, M1 Garand rifles and 30-06 ammo our country was producing. How the Hell has it come to pass I can't even buy .22 long rifle ammo.
Thanks to the.greatest generation I have the chance to vent.
While I'm at it I'll thank all those who have served and keep us safe.

During World War 2, the entire country was at war, everyone lived it. We've been at war for what, like 13 years and people can just live their lives and ignore it. Unless you have a family member involved there's no sacrifice, no shortage, no nothing. We as a nation are too disconnected. If this was during the 2nd World War, I don't think there would be any ammo of any sort on the shelves.

Well, I would not say that there is no sacrifice in these modern wars because there is and heroism as well. I think that we have an excellent and professional military and I applaud them for their thankless work!

I wasn't referring to the military or military families and in fact, said as much in my post. I'm talking about the American public at large. What are they asked to do?

I guess the sub point I was making is how the heck can our great industrial complex not keep up with demand. I have refused to be a hoarder, but I think I need to start buying stuff before the hoarders get it all.
Imagine how bad it would be if our warriors were not keeping evil at bay.

It's not that they can't, they could, but they aren't going to invest in increased capacity to fill a short term increase in demand. My guess is that most manufacturers have maximized production as much as they can without expanding.
