The new baby is here!!!

That is a great, did you get it with low rings or med rings? Either way, I am sure you could always slip something over the stock to get your stock weld if needed. That is a really sharp rifle. Scotty

Scotty -
It has medium rings on it that were lapped in before it was sent to me. It pops up with a good sight picture. I'm just not used to having this much space between the objective lens and the barrel. I'm sure a 50mm objective can fit on the medium rings. Never had a scope with an objective lens larger than 44mm (Zeiss 3.5 X 10).

As long as it pulls up to where it should, I would think it would be fine. I have lows on all of my rifles except my WBY as I had to go with high's because of the 50mm objective. Your rifle looks pretty great the way it is, and I think you have some room to get some eye relief to. Can't wait to hear how it shoots. Scotty

It is right at zero degrees with the wind chill this morning with snow coming down. I'm going to let it warm up to at least 10 degrees before I head out  . Gotta get the blood thickened up again.

Ah, you must be getting old! I know I wouldn't let the weather slow me down. Heck, you won't have to wait as long between shots! Just kidding, I know it is cold. Hope it warms up, can't wait to see some groups. Scotty

I was out shooting yesterday. It was clear and -9 when I reached the range. I have set my minimum at -15. At that temperature, the solvents all begin to freeze. At -20, clean-up becomes difficult. At -30, I quit functioning. I'm with you, 257 Ackley, in avoiding shooting in the extreme cold.

Sometimes you just need to sprinkle a little M---A----N on the rifles, it will unfreeze the solvents and prevent anything wrong from happening! Just kidding. -15, yeah, I would build a heated bench and shed to shoot from! Scotty

Scotty,

All that M...A...N is fine and dandy when I am hunting in extreme temperatures. Sitting at the bench is another story. For extended shoots, I do build a fire in the 100 yard shack, but that takes time, which is usually in short supply, so I simply go to the 400 yard range and do my thing. Also, in extreme temperatures, the open range is less crowded.

I am with you Mike. That is pretty cold. I haven't ever had to start a fire to do any shooting! I was just joshing with you. You two live up in the North, where it gets really cold. Down here, where I am, we are happy to see the mid thirties! At least I am happy. Scotty

Well, it is -1 and snowing at the moment. We have snowfall warnings posted today. Temperatures are falling to -29 on Saturday. I'll likely stay inside that day. I'll guarantee that the block heater is plugged in on my truck! Now, if I only had one for my rifle. 257 Ackley, I am looking forward to seeing some pictures of the groups shot with the rifle. Have you settled on a bullet to focus on with the new rifle?

Loaded up some 150 BT's that I got a few weeks ago from bivwak (seconds) that will be the first down the tube. Purchased three boxes of 180 AB's that will be used next. That is the bullet that I hope to get to shoot well. Will be trying both 4831SC and RL22 to start with. Rechecked the OAL of the loads and found that they work fine in the magazine of this rifle. Hope to post pics this afternoon when I get back from the range. It will be good to spend some time outside to start thickening the blood up  . We have had a really mild November, so there hasn't been a chance to get cold. This place doesn't have any heaters, so there won't be a concern of it being busy today. Time to go shoot

I love the 180s, having shot that weight of bullet almost exclusively in my 300 WSMs. However, I note that almost every rifle for which I develop loads opts for 165s. The 180s shoot so well, and the velocities are pretty good, that I am loathe to change weights.

If anything, you can bust a few coyotes with those 150gr BT's. I bet they will shoot fast and they would be an excellent yote round. Glad you were able to fit the rounds in the mag box. What length will it accomodate? 180's are probably going to sing out of that gun. I am guessing 3050 at least and of course under and inch, we are Marines afterall! Scotty

180s all deliver between 2950 and 3050 fps in my rifles. I generally try to hold them down to 3000 max as my best accuracy tends to be observed between 2900 and 3000 fps. The 150s will certainly do a fine job on coyotes.

I think he is going for a 500 yard elk rifle, so I would bet no elk would be safe with a 180 AccuBond between those speeds. With the excellent BC he should be able to come up with a tackdriver of a load and with some decent shooting be able to figure out where he is hitting way out there. Those 150gr BTs are going to be pretty dramatic on any yote and should give some great long range practice! Scotty

Took the new rifle out to the range today to see if it shoots. It was about 15 degrees with wind chill down around zero (I know thats nothing for you Scotty) Didn't have the chrony set up, so I'm not sure on velocities. I used RL19 and H414 with 150 grain ballistic tips (seconds). Here are a few targets from today:

I didn't have my shooting rests with me today, so these were shot with a make-shift block they had at the range. All targets were shot at 100 yards. There were no pressure signs (fairly light loads) and the rifle functioned as I expected.

There is nothing wrong with those groups! Man, I can almost see the shivering through your writing!

Wow. Great shooting Joel. Looks like RL 19 has some promise. It will be interesting to see if RL22 will work well with the 180's. Those are some great groups for a makeshift rest, new barrel and Artic Temps! What are your thoughts so far on that rifle. It looks like it has a lot of potential. Can't wait to see how you do with the Accubonds. Scotty

Scotty -
First thoughts; recoil wasn't bad at all (I don't like anything that kicks like a mule). Has a nice trigger that was consistant each time. It is light, right at 7.5 lbs with the scope.

Don't think it will ever be my prairie dog rifle, but it will be my go-to rifle for elk where there will be opportunities for 500 yard shots.
