Lets have some fun!
If you could only have "ONE" rifle what would it be and why?
This should prove to be surely interesting! I will post my idea of what I feel would be the ONE for me at a later time!
Later, Jager1

1. Mfg. ?
2. Caliber/Cart. ?
3. Action ?
4. Scope/Size X ?
5. Anything else needed?

This one:
Remington 700 custom with Mcmillan Edge stock.
35 Whelen
Leupold 6x36
It could do everything that I would want to do here but thankfully I have other choices too.

It depends on what is going to be hunted and where.

For most needs I would pick my

700 LSS in 338 RUM topped off with the Mark 4 4.5-14x40mm scope.
Spike111608a.jpg

If Africa DG is included, same rifle in 375 RUM.

JD338

I had it and let it go because of divorce and illness. It was:
-Model 70 Super Grade, 1958 manufacture, NRA Excellent 98%+, .257 Roberts.

The only other gun that I have ever coveted was my dad's:
-Mauser butterknife bolt handled, Commercial Oberndorf Mauser, in 7x57mm Mauser which was stolen.

I have some nice rifles now and can not really complain.

Gerry I sure like your 35 whelen every time you post a picture it makes want to get buy one or better yet have one built.

Thanks, hope people don't get tired of it but it is "the one" that could be used for anything around here.

Let's see some more, guys :)

This rifle has really been a great addition. Love the 338 Win Mag as a cartridge, the rifle shoots really well for me. Still trying to get that "one" scope on it, I really like, but right now, this rifle is "the one".

It also has a dear place since my wife gifted this rifle to me for our 10th Anniversary.

I was thinking that would be the one you would choose Scotty, good choice especially since it was such a great gift from your wife.

If I could only have one:

I would keep my 1949 model 70 in .270. The only addition to it woud be to throw a 3x9 scope on it. It already has a Lyman 48 so the scope would be mounted in QR mounts for quick iron sight access.

Which scope? I do have a Burris fixed 6x that would look real good on it.

I am actually pretty fond of fixed powers. Not for everything, but for a majority of my hunting a 4 or 6X scope would work pretty well.

You aren't kidding Gerry, I couldn't have built a better elk rifle.

Well Guys I would love to post a photo of my rifle but I can never get them to work.

My Rocky Mountain Rifle in the 35 Whelen with a Pac Nor 1-14 barrel, Defiance action,Timney trigger, McMillan stock and a Leica 4.5-15 X 42 scope on top.
It will look after everything I am ever going to hunt.

Blessings,
Dan

"It depends on what is going to be hunted and where."

Indeed!
Well, I'll consider this one for big game here in the lower 48. And with the recent events changing my ability to move about as I did, my thoughts have considered more range capability as of late. Now with that, I have also mentioed in the past, the soon to be available AB long range to be a game changer imo and that regard.
This would be pretty much a custom rig, as most I do with such, is built around the bullet and purpose. I have a hankering to build something in a .338-06 AI for some time. But seeings how that caliber isn't listed as of yet in the AB-LR line as of yet, I would go back to a .30-06 built with the 210 gr AB-LR in mind. Maybe a possibility of AI'ing that as well,,,just cuz.
I just wouldn't need much more than that for my wants and needs.

With all that in mind, lately I been thinking on a Lawton build. Now being a single shot guy, it would start off with their 400 action, either black oxided, Cera Coated, or dura coated off black, Jewel trigger, classic straight combed stock of a weather proof/resistant either lam. or syn. in gray coloration, 25" barrel of medium Palma contour, also coated same as receiver. Most likely be wearing a NightForce 5.5x22x56 in Burris Sig Zee rings on a EGW base to match the scope's capability. It would be simple if it weren't for the $$$$.
So much for dreaming in the near future,,,
I'll just stick with what I got. Shorter/lighter carry, and if the .30-06 TC barrel have, will do what I want for the above. If that fails, I would chance another Pac-Nor barrel build for it and that bullet. Scope upgrade of some kind will be a necessity either way.

1966 300 win mag, Chet Brown Stock, Leupold 3.5 X 10 with the BDC, reticle and "custom paint job". My number one choice since the spring of 1970.

Great picture Bill!

Just for complete coverage I'll pick my Rem 700XCR in 338 RUM. It weighs 8 lbs out the door with a 4.5-14x40 Leupold B&C and a muzzle brake.
I think of it as a (Wanna Be) 35 Whelen.

My Sako 85 in .270WSM and Leupold vx-3 3.5x10x40 scope and 150gr nosler PT's and norma oryx bullets for sure..3 Newfy moose tell me so  ..I however love my .375 H&H with the 260gr accubonds as well, but the .270WSM is on top for me so far  ..Lou

This one:

Military mauser 98 action: durable, plenty of spare parts and accessory options, accurate reliable]
stock: Claro walnut thumbhole with oil finish. Robust, excellent ergonomics, durable, easy to repair or refinish, and she's purdy.
Scope: Currently wears a Burris FF2 3X9. Very functional. This is the one thing I would change if this were the only one I could own. I'd upgrade to a Valdada or Zeiss 30mm 3X10 or something similar.
Barrel: Shilen heavy sporter. Nuff said.
Trigger: Currently wears military 2 stage. I'm comfortable with that. Will trade durability for a light trigger pull.
Caliber: .280 rem. Wouldn't change a thing. I can comfortably take any north american game except maybe grizzly bears at short to long range.
Sling: Turner Saddlry M1907 Nuff said.

I'd say that 300WM worked pretty well in that instance.

Savage 116FHSS .300 Winchester Magnum - 24" barrel - 4200 Bushell 3-9x40mm (or if you can afford it a Nosler TGR M48 Leupold VXIII 3.5-10X40mm)
