The One!

Fotis, please give the details of this kick azz 375 ruler? Sounds like Alaska ready weaponry?
I may need something like this when I make my move to Kenai! Someday I will make my
return and never leave. It's God's heaven on earth IMO! "Alaska the Last Frontier"

REM 700 action SS
Tubbs recoil lug
McSwirly stock, steel bedded and pillar bedded
Top of the line SS barrel 24" and fluted
scope holes drilled and tapped for 8/40 screws
Top of line scope in the 2-10 or 3x12 scope.

This will cover everything....

one for what NA or the planet?
Fotis, I was mainly looking for an opinion on what people feel is the ideal rifle for them no mater
where or what they're hunting.

Thanks for all the complements on my "ONE" rifle.
I must confess I'm really a Winchester M70 fan at heart but I've really been liking the Sako stuff lately. IMO the machining is 1st class on them. I've been really wanting a Bavarian carbine in a
270 win. Maybe someday?

Based on the above and this gentleman is the one making the rules for his question, then you have no choice but to go with at least a 375 in order to hunt within the laws of the land in Africa, when you hunt the Buffalo, Elephant, and Rhino. Actually the old 375 H & H is not a bad rifle to hunt the world with, if you can only have one rifle.

As far as hunting in North America, it would be impossible for me not to say a Model 70, 30-06 made in 1956. As I stated earlier on a different thread, I used this gun on every animal that is allowed to be hunted in British Columbia and The Yukon from Wolf to Brown Bear. Over the years we have had good success with Leupold Scopes.

However, I have recently told my husband that the "ideal" rifle for me would be a 300 H & H Dakota 76 with a Swaro scope. I dont want to be seen as un willing to compromise so I told him I would also accept the same rifle with a Leupold scope

Very big of you, Cheyenne.

I am with you YH as far as the ideal rifle for NA hunting. A .300 H&H Dakota would make me a very happy man as well, good choice!

Dr Mike (-:

Charlie, from our lips to gods ears--I hope we both get one. ( 300 Dakota ) Also I heard from Aleena that you were ill over the holidays. I was sorry to hear that sir and hope your feeling better now,

Dr Mike. I have grown very fond of the Brenneke. They tease us up this way that it is the poor mans 375 H & H. But I am use to being teased about my dog, so the Brenneke gives them new material and gives him some relief (-;

Cheyenne,

Can I tease you too! :p
Ya know, if you blew out the 300 H&H case, you could make it a 300 Wby.

I do like the Swaro glass, its awesome.

Cheyenne, I am home and slowly recovering from MRSA pneumonia and the flu, thanks for asking. The Dakota 76 is a fine rifle and my all time favorite. I hope you get one and please post pictures.

People make fun of our dog also, she is a Cardigan Gorgi and silly as they come but loveable.

That just hurt big time!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even though I no longer have one.....

Ouch to pick on the 35 Whelen that is almost sacrilegious
Always remember that the real reason the 30-06 was invented was to make so many REAL calibers using that case

PS. Example the 35 Whelen and the 270 Win 8)
Blessings,
Dan

Scotty mentioned this to me once--or was it one hundred times (-;

Sorry about that guys, when jim mentioned the weatherby, I remembered how much more one can get from the 340 and wondered why would someone ( or anyone ) get a 35 whelen when they can have a 340 Weatherby.
But in re reading Jims post he actually said 300 ---my bad.

I am glad your feeling better Charlie, all the best in the new year sir.

Dr. Mike, what bullet are you using in your Brenneke, if you dont mind me asking ? Make and Grain

Scotty uses the 35 Whelen Jedi mind trick on anybody he can get to listen. I stopped listening after he got me with the 45-70 Jedi mind trick. Think it's only good for one rifle? Maybe?

Cheyenne, I really believe that there are so many calibers & too little
time 8).
I always tease about the 30-06 but this fall I picked up 85
once fired 30-06 brass while at the range. I wonder what that means 8)

Blessings,
Dan

Cheyenne,

The Brenneke is a work in progress. I am currently shooting 250 grain Nosler AccuBonds. I launch these at near 2800 fps, which gives good accuracy and delivers a pretty good smack on game. I have a variety of loads planned for testing as spring opens, among which are the 300 grain Woodleigh and the 300 grain A-Frame, inaddition to 286 grain pills in these bullets and in Norma Oryx and Nosler Partition. I have a variety of 250 grain bullets to test, but I'll likely stay with the AccuBond in that weight as it gives me such excellent performance.

Dr Mike. I was just curious as we are using only the woodleighs at this time ( 286 and 250 ) Our grandfather is retired and controls most of our purchases. He is a bit of a character, retired and in the summer lives alone in the mountains. He has a sign ( actually several ) but one that says. There are only two rules in this cabin. Ruke No# 1. the one with the gold makes the rules and No # 2.-- refer to Rule No # 1

the 9.3 x 64 that I am currently using is one of his old rifles that was made in the 1980 s by a company called Hartman and Weiss. He has several old guns and a nice collection of Weatherbys but uses a marlin 45/70, 90% of the time. Like I said he is a character.

Sask boy/Dan --no worries about the 30-06 / 35 whelen humor. I was just giving Scotty a bad time. We know each other from a different forum and enjoy joking with each other.

Your grandfather sounds like an interesting fellow. We reach a stage in life where we are curmudgeons, we know we are curmudgeons, and we don't much care whether people like curmudgeons or not.

Cheyenne,

The 340 Wby is a good one. I have the poor mans version, a 338 RUM.
Far a one gun hunt all, except DG, the 340 Wby/ 338 RUM would cover it from up close or far far away.
