The start of my .338 Edge

I posted some of this in another thread but thought I'd start a thread so that I could update it as I go. I did the metal work yesterday and now I have a bunch of stock work left.

The specs are:
Remington SS 700 action with a single shot adapter. I intend on buying a PTG jig to thread the bolt handle for different bolt knobs also.
Krieger .338 30" 9.35 twist in a custom contour to make it under the 16 weight limit for hunting in Idaho (1.25" for 10" and then straight taper to 1" at 30"). The barrel weighed right at 8.5lbs before machining.
Jewel 1 1/2oz trigger
One of my 4 port muzzle brakes
The stock is going to be a one off custom but it's based on a Rem. 40X wood stock. From there it's going to have some cut off and some added and then it will be wrapped with carbon fiber by a buddy of mine that does prosthetic limbs. I'm actually going to play with it until it fits perfect and the scope alignment is right before I have him wrap it. Basically it's going to be like a benchrest stock with a flat forend and butt stock. We might actually make a mold of it when it's done to make some lighter versions later on.

It will be topped off with a Leupold VX3 6.5x20LR on a 20MOA rail because they are lighter than Nightforce by a good margin and I get to have a heavier barrel.

I have about 400 300gr SMK's and 200 300gr AB's to try out but I'm going to run some 260gr .760BC CEB's through it too.

Very nice! That should be a monster when its complete. How long do you think it'll take to complete?

That sounds like a fascinating project. I will definitely watch with interest as you progress.

That is going to be a devastating long-range elk blaster! Heavy too...

I really like the stock, and don't think I could make myself cover it in anything. It looks good. Looking forward to seeing your completed rifle, some good range reports and hopefully a photo of your rifle and a big ol' elk carcass, and you grinning from ear to ear.

If you're like me, you'll be all set up for that long range shot and a big bull or buck will wander into view at 25 yards or so... Had that happen in Wyoming a few years ago. Not being one to ignore a gift buck, I took the short range shot.

Awesome project!

I might change my mind about this particular stock because it has some really good color and grain to it but I do have about 20 wood 40x stocks and some of them are in pretty bad shape. So I have a lot to pick from there. I have some that are short youth stocks I only paid 15.00 each for I might use instead.

Scotty,

It will probably take a month or so to have it fully complete. I'm at my friend mercy for wrapping it and there are other things like bear hunting and shooting rock chucks that will get in the way.

Guy,

That has happened to me before as well. That's why when I'm on my motorcycle I carry 2 guns. A big one in a case and a little one more readily available. I build a .284 with a 18" barrel earlier this year just for that reason. This gun is too heavy for packing a long ways. It's going to stick close to roads and trails. I plan on doing a .375-.338 Lapua Imp before long as well so we'll see which one wins out for fall duty.

Awesome project.
Looking forward to the report on the performance of the 338 Edge.
Very cool buddy!

Wow! Thats gonna be one neat long range monster. I would take a hard look at the 338 Edge if my Sendero 300 RUM barrel goes south???

Might as well do it Brian.. No sense in having two 300 RUMS!

Looking forward to it Nathan. I like to see all the rifles from all of you guys come together during the Summer and the Fall pictures of them laying over deer/elk/moose and lopers!

Woo hoo! I just sold my Rock Creek .338 barrel and ordered a Krieger 10 twist .375 1.350 for 5.5" with a straight taper to 1.10" at 28". Now all I need is a reamer and my Stiller TAC 338 actions. Hopefully by summer I'll be slinging rounds down range in my .375-338 Lapua Imp too.

Cutting Edge just came out with a 340gr .416 bullet with a BC of .780. So my next one might have to be a .416 of some variety. I guess they are getting 2990fps out of the bullet in a 40Hart (416RUM). I happen to have one of those reamers.

Wow, now that would be cool... 340 at almost 3K! That would have to leave a mark!

Another cool thing is the .375 and the .416 would retain over 3000lbs of energy @ 1000yds. Talk about elk thumping at it's finest.

I couldn't stand it so I ordered a .416 barrel today. I have to try it out for myself.

Wow, that is just incredible power! Man, talk about having some serious smack at a 1000!

I just edited my previous post. I ordered a .416 barrel today to try it out for myself. I'm going to go broke buying CEB bullets but it could be worse.

Look at these gems.

So what cartridge? A 40 Hart? Nathan, that is going to be a monster. I saw where some guys were shooting elk with the 350 Speer's and just flat hammering elk... That has to be crushing! Those CEB's are pretty serious!

I have a .416RUM reamer already so that will probably be the one. I shot a 5 point bull 5 or 6 years ago with my .416 Rem. with 350gr Speers at 350yds. To say it was "lights out" was a understatement. I shot him in the lungs and you would of thought it was a brain shot. He just collapsed and barely wiggled. Guns are just like motors....there is no replacement for displacement. I bet Fotis can attest to that as well.

I just did the recoil calculations on it and it doesn't look good. A 16lb .416RUM with 340's @ 3000fps using 95grs of powder has the same recoil as a 9lb .340 Weatherby shooting 225's @ 3050fps. The barrel I ordered is a full 1.25" barrel 30" long. So it will be 16lbs or dang close. I might have to put a recoil pad on this one and the .375-.338 Lapua AI.

As a side note: There should be plenty of boomers for you to test drive when you come this way in the fall. Like I said you might want to go hunting first though so your shoulder isn't too sore to shoot a elk.

Man, you have NO IDEA how excited I would be to shoot some of those beasts buddy! That 416 RUM sounds very cool. I want a 416 but something maybe a touch more portable! I cannot imagine what a hammer that rifle is going to be..
