The ultimate mule deer and antelope rifle?

A person could do a whole lot worse than a 7mm RM. They tend to shoot well and deliver a smashing blow way out there.

My 264 sendero will do for now I guess, 8)

7MM RUM with 160 gr Accubonds at 3333 fps. in a 700 xcr with a 6x24x40 Bushnell 4200 Elite, Mill Dot Ret. Sighted in at 300 yards. It weighs about 8.5 lbs. loaded and will make a 300 Wby sweat trying to keep up. It just so happens I have one handy for the occasion. Floats like a butterfly, stings like a ballistic missle 8)

Did not have a picture ready, but here is the Deer, Antelope, and Coyote thunder bolt! 6mm REMINGTON I keep telling you guys :!:

Gee, I dunno', David. I'm told that 6mm bullets bounce off of mule deer. They are getting tougher as time goes by. Any truth to the story that antelope will outrun a 6mm.

Maybe that is why Pop uses his 416 Wby.

I love the 6mm Rem... a BDL-V was my only rifle for about a 6 year stretch. I shot everything with that gun... and it killed it all quite dead. I did however, notice that it wasn't as potent as the .25-06 that I'd used before... and quite a lot since. It is a fine cartridge for sure... coyote/pronghorn rifle... yep, it's the winner. But, strictly big game... it comes up a little short.

Deer and Pronghorn rifle... west of the mighty Mississip... .25-06 all day long. My 100 grain E-Tip load clocking 3300 and change would do nicely... even if elk were the critter-de-jour.

I've got a 788 in 6mm that I wouldn't hesitate to go after 'lopes with. Just need to ditch the cheapo Bushy that's on in now, and get the trigger done, and I'm set.

I have never had the opportunity to hunt either because they don't live on my side of the big muddy. I would have to flip a coin to choose between my custom Rem 700 with Shilen #6 SS 26" barrel 25-06 that has killed close to 200 whitetail deer or my new, only used two seasons, custom Rem 700 Shilen #5 CM 27 3/4" barrel 264 Win mag that I have killed 5 deer with. If I had to do a lot of walking I would pick the 264 Win mag because it is a bit lighter rifle. On the other hand if I had to do whole lot of walking and climbing mountains I would pick my sporter M-96 Swede Mauser in 6.5X55 Swede. It is much lighter and will do anything a 25-06 will do with a little heaver bullet.

I hate to admit it Songdog, but you are probably right. The best coyote, deer, and antelope rifle ever to come down the pipe was probably the 25-06 with the 6.5-06 right there with it :!: Either one of those in a 24 or 26" barreled rifle would be the cat's meow. A person can keep getting to the larger cases and faster cartridges but for the purpose stipulated they both would be fantastic :!: :p My .280 Remington I had with the 140 gr. AccuBond at over 3000 fps would be wonderful, but then that damn Nodak's 7mm with a 160 gr. AccuBond would be even better....... , or the 280 AI oh my..... You do have to admit though Songdog that by using a good, make that fantastic bullet, the 90 gr. E-tip in my son's 6mm Remington, with good shot placement, that cow elk of his he got this year didn't stand a chance at 350 yards and she was a big cow! It chronographed at 3180 fps in his 22" barrel on his Ruger MKII and has a BC of .403. It worked and would continue to work, but there is better for the bigger stuff, okay I admit it!  :p

Oh my Pop I love those laminates for both the look and the added strength. That is a gorgeous 204 Ruger! WOW :!:

I am using the 140 VLd's right now. Soon I will start with the 130 Accubonds.

3300 fps ?????????? HMMMM

We are talking here about the Ultimate mule deer and antelope rifle and have discussed both caliber, bullet, and rifle selection. NOW JUST SPEAKING RIFLE TYPE ALONE, I would have to say that the Ruger #1B in (insert your caliber of choice here) would be the ULTIMATE CLASSIEST RIFLE from the prairie to the mountains bar none :!: Any time you see a guy out there with a Ruger #1 you have to admit that you have come upon a gentleman who knows his stuff :!: Just wanted to stir the pot a little bit POP and see what THE RIFLE should be............. I bad!

Poor choice of words. Sound self promoting or boastful. Should have said IS A SERIOUS RIFLEMAN just like I believe all of us on this forum are!

Pop, that Sendero .264 is a sweet set-up. I used that caliber for years, only difference was I throated it for the 125 gr. Nosler Partition bullet and it never failed me.

These days it's either a Vanguard .257Wby with a 110 gr. AB or a .270wsm with a 140 gr. AB.

Looking back over the years, the largest mule-deer (B&C buck) I have taken weighed 250# skinned and gutted, and what did I use?, an old Remington 700 in .270 Win. and a 130 Partition bullet, taken at over 300 yards .   What can I say.

If I were rolling in dough, a Dakota #10 might do it for me, in .25- or 6.5-06.
