Alright, so I'm looking around for something 6.5ish for a good friend of mine on gunsamerica when something really catches my eye. Hmm, that looks to be a M70 Super Grade in 6mm Remington at a price under one of the newer South Carolina guns. Did I mention it includes a Burris Fullfield 3x9 and bases/rings? Last I recall, Winchester never made a SG in 6mm Rem so that would mean that this has a custom barrel, right? Umm, that trigger looks awful shiny, almost like one of the Timney units. Hmm, it says here that the rifle is a "Scherz Custom." Better Google this fellow Scherz. Well, low and behold Mr. Scherz just happens to own Gila River Tactical which specializes in very accurate rifles and recently moved from AZ to ID. At this point I'm thinking I better call the shop that's selling this rifle. Well, it turns out that it is a custom barrel and that the action has been blueprinted, the stock has been glass and pillar bedded and that it is in fact a Timney trigger. Also, it shot very well in the store's test tunnel. Alright, I just happened to have recently sold a Lazzeroni Firebird to a pal that I had built many moons ago in college, so I make the plea to mama that this would actually keep me at a zero net gain in the rifle department. In fact, I sound like an insurance salesmen and explain to her that "At this price, I can't afford not to!" She relents I make the call and will give 'em the FFL info on Monday. This is the first Monday in a very long time that I've looked forward to! I'm a sucker for good deals and Super Grade M70s.

Joe,

That sounds like an excellent purchase! Congratulations. I'll be looking for some pictures before long and as you begin load work, I'll be watching to see the groups. That should be one fine rifle. Again, congratulations. Don't let Mama shoot it, however; it could be lost forever if your good lady discovers what fun it is to shoot a smooth cartridge like the 6mm Rem.

Thanks Doc! I think this one will be safe, as mama really loves her Kimber 84M in 257 Roberts. But then again, she's murder on prairie rats and this 6mm might be just the ticket! Happy hunting in BC and looking forward to more pics and stories from your hunting season.

Joe - Michael Scherz is the same fellow who built the .375 H&H Model 70 I picked up a few months ago.

Please, let me know if you ever want to sell your 6mm Rem by him. I have a huge respect for his work.

Congrats on what should prove to be a very cool rifle. I've been handloading for the 6mm Rem since the mid 1970's and it is a terrific performer!

Regards, Guy

Wow, that is an awesome rifle right there! Talk about a well put together rifle! Very nice. Good eye's on picking that up..

The 6mm Rem is just too cool as well.. You almost have the trio of the x57!

Congrats buddy!

Thanks guys. I got my FFL xfer all squared away today so should be here in a few days. Damn these Washington taxes though. They take a cut out of everything. If I luck into an elk this weekend, I'm guessing they'll hit me up for one of the backstraps. I'm with you guys in my affinity for the 7x57 case. What's not to like with that nice long neck and shoulder angle. I'm thinking I'll start off with 90gr ABs and maybe give a whirl at some etips. If you remember, my last venture with a 6mm (FN Mauser in 243 Win) ended abruptly after the gunsmith discovered too small a bore diameter was jacking my pressures through the roof. Because it was a gift from my stepfather, has beautiful wood, and I have an aversion to selling off a dangerous rifle to some unknowing soul, I plan to rebarrel it some day. I was thinking .260 Rem or 6.5x55 Swedish, but a 7x57 would be nice and polish off the trio!
Joe

Yeah, nothing to not love about that 7x57 Joe. I wouldn't mind having one of my own, but my son lets me shoot his enough to keep me happy! HA!

Thanks again guys. I'm going to have her shipped back to NM and pick her up about mid Nov. from my old FFL pal. This will give me some time to buy some dies and brass. As cool as the 6mm Remington is, you would think that companies other than Winchester and Remington would make it. No luck with Nosler, Norma, or Lapua.
