Three guys, lots of .223 & .308 and tons of fun!

Met three guys at the range earlier today. They had an array of .308 & .223 rifles that I'd have drooled over in my SWAT & USMC days! Top notch stuff. Suppressors. Nightforce & US Optics scopes. Boxes and boxes of ammo. Spotting scopes, sandbags and stuff... Wow!

We had a blast. Made a few adjustments and confirmed zeros then took it all the way to... 200 yards? Yup, only 200. One fellow had a top notch rifle but had never shot 200 yards before. We took care of that! He and his adult son had a blast shooting that Very Well Made .308 AR-type rifle at 200.

No cool photos to share. Just a real good time, with three guys and a pile of GREAT equipment at the range for a few hours. Knocked the heck out of a few bullseyes... :mrgreen:

Before their arrival I did get time to get the good old "Green Machine" properly sighted-in again with the new scope mounted. Just a 4.5-14x Leupold with M1 turrets. I swiped it off my .300 WSM, because I couldn't stand the .308 just hanging around with no scope anymore! I tucked it away, no sense making anyone jealous of what a good bolt action can do... :grin:

The quality level of available equipment staggers me.

I know you, me and a bunch of guys here have gone into seriously dangerous situations with run-of-the-mill firearms & ammo... And now I'm seeing guys show up at shoots, and even just semi-casual shooters at the range, with top notch gear that I'd have REALLY appreciated when things were getting tense and guns were in play.

Very cool stuff. Those US Optics scopes are incredible. One fellow showed up with one on his .223 (a CQB version) and one on his .308 (a 1.8 - 10x). Both rifles built specifically for him.

Another guy had a wonderful full-on custom AR-10 type rifle with an outstanding Nightforce scope... Wow... Beautiful stuff.

I did some good training with them, and they were pleased to be on target so well, though we hardly scratched the surface of what their equipment is capable of. The guy with the custom .308 AR-10 type rifle was amazed when I showed him the 600 yard targets and told him that we could get him on target "way out there" very easily. He's apparently saving that until next time.

Oh poor me... After 18 years of using a taxpayer purchased scope on my .308 Win, I had to turn it in when I retired from cop work. Imagine that! :mrgreen: Of course I was the only guy left at the department who knew it was department property, but yeah, it was their scope.

So, now I'm down one scope for a precision rifle. I'll get it figured out, but for now my existing 4.5-14x Loopie will serve just fine. It's pretty much like what I had on there before, except I had M1 turrets installed several years ago. It's been on my .300 WSM Model 70.
