Throating long...

I've done this once when I had a new barrel put on my 7mm rem mag and I can't say I've experimented enough with it to form a solid conclusion. I do think it let me push the velocity a bit higher without seeing pressure signs though.

In this case, I'm wondering what (If any) gains could be realized in a 7mm-08 with a long action. Say 140gr E-tips seated at 3.035" oal vs what I currently load them at(2.795" oal)?

Way back in the early 80's, I read an article by John Wooters ( a 7mm Rem Mag fan himself) where he throated his Model 700 BDL ( 24") deeper 1/4". He liked the Nosler 175 ( then a semi-pointed bullet) seated out with the base even with the bottom of the neck, just to create a bit more powder room. As you probably know, we didn't have some of the 'gee wiz" powders we have now back then. I would "opine" :))) that it would be worth it "only" if a man wanted to experiment (hunt with) the longer 160s up through the 180 Bergers, etc ( and you would probably want a faster twist/ 26-28" barrel then too). My last foray with the 7mm Rem Mag was with a 26" takeoff barrel on a Mod 700 and I got 3100/160 and 3000/175 with R26 & R33, respectively. So, with a longer barrel/faster twist/deeper throat, you 'could" most likely run right with a 7mm STW but using less expensive/readily available brass! Good luck to you pard!

Throating long is sorta counter intuitive with today's long nosed bullets. My current 7mm Mashburn was chambered with a reamer that lets the 175 Partition touch at 3.650. Well, that is great if all I ever planned to shoot is the blunter nosed bullets. My rifles shoots most stuff pretty well, but it really isn't optimized for bullets like the 180 ELD, 195 Berger's and similar since when loading them at magazine length I am still a mile from the rifling.

This was a hot ticket back when everyone shot Partitions and wanted to maximize case space, but in practice, I don't think it is needed. My advice would be to seat a bullet you want to shoot, within your magazine or case confines and allow room to chase the lands as the rifling erodes.

If you specifically wanna shoot the 140 Etip, then I would say go forth and conquer with getting the throat let out some. If the rifle is straight and chambered correctly that bullet will probably allow for a bunch of jump and you'll pick up a little case space.

If you want more fps than your 7-08 will give and going to a long action sounds like you want a 280 Rem or 280AI. Nothing gained with the 7-08 and playing with bullet seating length.

Magazine space wouldn't be a problem 3.4" mag and the loaded cartridge would be 3.035" oal. What I don't know is how much if any velocity this would gain?

That is probably all true but why stop there? I have 7mm rem mag dies as well as 7mm-08. I don't have 280 or 280AI dies. This is just something I was considering with a 7mm-08.

Just for information's sake, I can get 2990fps with a 140 E-tip out of my standard 7mm-08 with 22" barrel. My long throat 7mm Rem mag with 26" barrel maxes out at 3300fps. My guess is that a standard 7mag chamber in a 22" barrel might hit about 3100fps. 100fps gain for 20 grains of additional powder? Sorry if this seems stupid to anyone, just stuff that keeps my mind occupied during the day...lol.

(y) +1 I have plenty of thoughts on my mind that keep me occupied during the day! It is inquisitive human nature...I think...

I am forever thinking about different things in a days time. I most think what if I tried this, would this powder bullet combo be more accurate than what I am using, etc. The bottom line conclusion I always come to is, there is no harm in trying something new, or I am very happy with what I have now so why try something new. My other thoughts are lots of times I am very happy with a load that gives less velocity as it is more accurate. As John Wooters once said 100fps doesn't make much difference one way or the other.

Even if you could get 5% more powder space that would only mean maybe a couple percent more velocity at the same pressure. So maybe you could get 30 or 50 fps more? And a trade off would be a long action. Long actions don’t bother me at all but then you could chamber a bigger case to begin with.

If you really wanted to play with it you could shoot it over a chrono, throat it out and load long (still in the short action), then single load some rounds with the bolt removed and shoot over the chrono.

It would be interesting! An expensive experiment though.
