Well the Nevada draw was posted today. I somehow came out with a buck muley tag and antlerless elk. So I guess this means I better start to get serious about getting a load for my 338-06AI. The deer tag I'm not too worried about I will take one off my front porch with the 280AI. But the elk tag I'm pretty excited about. First time I've ever drawn one. It's a late tag and if I remember right I have two months of time to take it. I will update once I have my reg book in hand. Pretty darn excited right now!!

Nice, make sure you take lots of photo's. It shouldn't be too hard to find a good load, what bullets are you thinking of?

Any of those will work, I know the 225 gr AB in 35 Whelen and 2750 + does wonders on moose :) that weight in a 338-06 AI would be a great load if your gun will shoot it.

Sounds as if you've done well, Jake. Best of luck in the hunt this fall. The 338-06 will deliver the goods for you, no doubt.

A 225 AB at 2700 or more would do for just about everything!

Congratulations Jake, you are going to have a great fall. !!! How many points did it take. ?

Jake, what area did you draw? Short story you might like. I was driving up from Tucson to go to Winnemucca and I was getting petty tired. Couldn't drive all that fast because there was stll a lot of snow and black ice going over the hump by Ely. I've got the heater going full blast to keep from freezing and my window wide open and just crawling along. I look out my left window and here is a cow elk walking alongside and looking in the window at me. Like to scared the crap out of me. That had to be about twenty some odd years ago as I was hooking up with my hunting partner to do a hunt up in the John Day area of Oregon. We had bull tags and all we saw were cows on that hunt. Situation normal. :(

Paul,

She was wondering what was wrong that you would be driving in such weather!

Congrats on the tag for the deer and elk Jake! I bet you have to be excited to have a chance to run that 338-06 after some elk. Very excited for you buddy.

Congrats on the tags buddy. I'm with Fotis, the 225 AB will bring the hammer down on anything.

I should have told her I was hooking up with my hunting partner in Winnemucca so we could go to Oregon and shoot some of her relatives.

My buddy has been really lucky when it comes to drawing for elk in the Ely area. He averages a tag about once every two years and a couple of time has gotten one every year. On the years he doesn't draw a tag for deer or elk, he guides youngsters going out on their first hunts for free.
Kind of a payback thing for him. I took him on his first deer hunt when he was 17. We've been very tight friends ever since. That has to have been over 40 years ago.

Jake congratulations on pulling that Elk tag!!! I am looking forward to a great story with lots of photos..

Blessings,
Dan

Jake, congratulations on the tags! That .338-06 would be a heavy duty performer with Partitions either 210 or 225 grain bullets will flatten mule deer and elk.

062 064 068 just north of BM over to Mtn City Highway and up to Wildhorse and south of Midas and Tuscarora. I know they are there I've seen them up at Goldstrike north of Carlin. Season is from Nov 22 through Jan 1 so I have plenty of time. Running some numbers the other night with the 225 AB and at 2800 I have 3900 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle and 1500 ft lbs @ 700 yards. Pretty impressive for a lowly 06!!!

Yeah, that is alot of juice Jake. Really is an awesome combo you have. I think I am going to work with 225's next year if I could lay into a bunch of AB or PT's. Right now, I am sticking with the 210's at 3050.
