G'day all,

Every now and then it's a requirement of my job to put down a bull/cow/weaner.

This requires either a frontal head shot or side one from 100 feet or so.

Would the above bullet withstand the impact and penetrate to the brain?

Regards,
Dicko.

I don't think it will be a problem. What speed are you driving the bullet at? Cartridge?

JD338,

I would have to work up a load for this bullet. Cartridge is 25/06.

I have been using 117gn Hot Cor Federal loads but have just worked up a load for 120gn PT.

However as I quite often come across a few wild dogs and cats, I thought the BT would roll these and be a good general purpose pill for the mercy shots as well.

Regards,
Dicko.

Dicko,

I have used the 115 gr PT in my 257 Roberts on wild dogs and coyotes. Plenty of expansion and a nice exit wound the size of a quarter.

I, personally, would choose a different bullet. My buddies and I have had mixed results with the 100 grain Ballistic Tip.

We usually shoot Nosler Partitions and have shot a pile of wild hogs with the 100 grain bullet. One of my buddies decided to try the 100 grain BT in his 25-06. He shot a deer with it and it did fine. So, he decided to take it hog hunting. Not good, he had mulitple problems with the 100 grain BT causing large surface wounds but not penetrating sufficiently to kill a wild hog. He had to do some tracking and more shooting on several hogs, back to the partitions.

Actually, I was forced to change to the 100 grain Barnes TSX in my 25-06 due to stupid CA laws, and have had excellant success with that bullet. I have shot through quite large wild hogs with it. I would imagine that it would drop any head shot bovine you wanted to shoot.

I have heard bad reports about shooting bears in the head before, I would think that a big bull would be pretty similar. Guys shot it in the head and were dragging it to the quad and it woke up on them. I would opt for the PT, ET, or TSX just to make sure you got to the brain and that he wasn't just KO'd. Don't want a big old pissed off bull waking up while your trying to get him pulled into the trailer to haul off.

All those bullets will kill a yote or cat as well.
