Trail camera picts of the elk I'll be chasing this fall

Very beautiful bulls. I am sure I have been very near there. How many PP does it take to draw in that area. I have given up on a trophy bull in Oregon as I won't live long enough to draw a tag. I will be very happy chasing first or second season spikes spikes. Still gathering them in Wyoming, Nevada, Az and Washington however. Someday????

From what I saw, it was way harder to get the drop on a darned spike than it was a 6x6.. I will be back to OR.. I will count coup on one of them little spikes! :twisted:

Could be Charlie, but I will take my chances! Elk hunting is deep into me now. I am not sure what it is, but I can't stand waiting for elk season.. All I can think about is finding them smelly old animals on them awesome landscapes they hang out in.

I hope you do get the opportunity to shoot a 6X6 soon. I passed on a couple of 7X7s two years ago because I was focused on a younger bull for meat. The big boys are a rush, however.

I just have freaky luck, when I have a spike tag, I see all 5 and 6 pointers and when I have a 4 point or better bull tag, all I see are spike and forks. Just Charlie luck!

Just returned from a three day scouting trip. It's gonna be a good season! I saw 132 elk,26 mule deer and 11 whitetails. Biggest bull I saw would go about 310-320, nice six point. I also saw a muley buck that would go about 160 and a whitetail that would go an easy 140. This weekend I determined that I would buy an archery tag for deer to have in my pocket while I'm hunting elk. I took my twelve year old son for his first true scouting trip - he did well! He had a little trouble falling asleep the first night; I guess I shouldn't have shown him the stump that a bear had worked over (fresh claw marks and all). It was about 30' from our tent. Lions, Tigers and Bears Oh My! :lol:

To draw this hunt you'll need 15 pts or you can get lucky like me and draw it with 9! I met a guy who drew it with 0 this year. Remember that 25% of the tags are reserved for a general draw - no pts needed. This hunt is the Wenaha unit big bull tag for archery.

I am headed to MT Emily for 2nd season Spikes this year. Your pictures look like the country around Moss Springs and the summit between Elgin and Pendleton. Lovely country, not snowcapped peaks but steep and nasty as you know.
Wish you luck, thats a great unit and a great tag. The rut should help.!!!

Are you going to use a blind or a tree stand? Or are you going to get close to the area and call?

I've had good luck with tree stands - especially in the hot evenings over water and licks. I like to call and be mobile in the morning hours. I've found that if the rut is on it's better to be mobile and be aggressive if you get a bull to respond. If the bull has cows the only way I've found to work is to get inside his "personal space" and challenge him. Challenge him from too far away and he'll just herd his cows away from you. I'll be having somebody calling for me so I can ambush them on the way in. I'm getting pretty excited for this season!

I usually elk hunt with a call of some sort (cow or bull) and I have found it works better for me to be moving while calling. When I was younger, I had several calling hot spots go cold on me from being in one place too long. Just my preference.
