Trapping?

Well, trapping season ended yesterday for k9s. I ended up with 9 coyotes, 2 red fox, 1 grey fox and 4 weasels. Man did I learn a lot. I had a blast and was up before the alarm clock every morning for the past 2.5 months. I had 2 chew outs and a few brush bys. Next year, I will do more blocking on my sets and set my gear further away from the deer carcass pile in the woods. This year I set up real close to it and it didn't work like I expected.

The best part of the season was that both land owners already asked me to come back next season!!!

Next season's goals are 15 coyotes 4 fox, 6 weasels, and if I draw tags for otter, bobcat and fisher go get one of each. I really enjoyed the time in the woods and hope it saves a few fawns this spring.

I remember being 5 years old and my father would take me with him when he and his buddy would go check their coyote, fox, badger traps. When I was about 9 I started a trap line behind our house along the river where we lived. I trapped mostly racoons and muskrats. Last time I did any serious trapping was in my Senior year of High School. Sure wish I had more time to do it now. Really enjoyed doing it.

Here in WA you can only use a Box Trap, so that's a no go on coyotes. I have a couple box traps and need to get out to see if I can't get a couple bobcats. Bobcats would be worth the effort. At one of the fur buys there were several bobcats that went for $775 ea.

A guy near here, in N. Idaho, said he had several coyotes that wend for $175 ea and a few that went $150. He averaged $100 for something like 7 yotes, and that included one dud that only got $4.

Definitely need to step up my game next year. A few bobcats and a bunch of coyotes (I like calling too) and I could have a nice custom rifle.

A new rifle is a worthy goal, seems appropriate for the effort.

Sounds as if you had quite a successful season for the first effort. Congratulations! Here's to next season. (y)

I used to run guided trapping trips for my clients. It was a riot! Started trapping as a little
Guy and it's by far a passion! If I had a smaller litter of kids I'd do more
Of it!!

I've trapped fox (when we had some in my area), coyotes, otter, beaver, fisher, raccoon, mink, muskrats and weasel over the last 50 years in Wisconsin, but my only experience with cable restraints is with trapping beaver. I live, trap and hunt in the cranberry growing are of central Wisconsin.
