Trying to stick to my "not buying a gun this year" but, the local gun classifieds has a Ruger Hawkeye 30-06 in a Hogue stock for sale for $500 with a box of ammo and a new in box unmounted Vortex diamondback 3-9x40. Now I am not looking for a 30-06 but I have been, and with recent talk on the forum, interested in a 338-06 rebore. I know the Ruger doesn't come up alot here in forum, I have a M77 Mark II, what are your thoughts on the M77 Hawkeye?

One of my most accurate rifles is a 1968? Vintage Ruger 77 in .30/06 still easily under MOA

Good luck sitting on your hands. I simply don’t have the fortitude.
I have owned several Ruger M77 rifles but the only Hawkeye of the bunch is my current .22-250 and it shoots great.
For $500, I don’t think you could go wrong.

Ah, well, technically, you would not be buying "a" gun, but two guns; one in 30-06 and one in 338-06.

Technically you are not buying a "gun", so you would not be breaking your plan!
You are acquiring a "rifle" for a donor for a build to get that interesting 338-06 you have been desiring to fill that void in your hunting battery.
So, I will go outright "enabler" here and say, "Yes, you gotta do it!" (You are getting a great price on the donor!)
While you may not be saving money as compared to not purchasing this donor, but you are reducing the cost of the overall project by getting it!
The Ruger Hawkeye is a great rifle and will provide you with a robust, reliable platform for this great project! (Rebored, or rebarreled!)
(It is an improved version of the Ruger Mk II that I built my 376 Steyr and 416 Taylor rifles on).

I have a LH SS Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 6.5 CM. Yesterday I shot a 1/4" group at 100 yards with factory 140 gr. ELD-M ammo. So, they can be very accurate.
I like them because they are similar to the CRF Winchester M70's with the claw extractor and 3 position safety, of which I have four. So, switching back and forth is very easy.
At that price, you could always resell it, IF you have buyer's remorse. My suggestion is that as long as you can afford your rent/mortgage, car payments, clothing, and food, BUY IT!

Agreed. I did the same thing and rebored a Hawkeye into a 9.3x62.. excellent rifle.
