ultimate long range coyote rifle?

I would probably look at the New 26Nosler for a long range Yote killer if I lived out west where I could stretch it out and not worry. Plus have a nice speed goat, Deer and Elk rifle all in one package.

This would be solely a dog killer and long range steel plinker.

Recoil and barrel life would be something to think about.

Plain old .243 Winchester, twisted for the 115 grain bullets. Wyatt's extended magazine box. Loaded at the middle nod, and set up for accuracy. Topped with a Leupold VXIII 6.5-20 x 50.

Maybe a little biased  but I might have one about as good as it gets. It's a Ruger #1B in 6mm Remington wearing a 6x42mm Leupold. I use my all-around load for deer and antelope so I don't have to mess with sighting in again with a new round. It's the 100 gr. Partition at about 3100 fps. It doesn't mess them up very badly and just puts a nice hole in the hide. No blow-ups or other stuff to worry about.

Got the 6-20 leupold...just trying to carefully go about the build.

just wanted everyone elses thoughts or opinions on the ultimate dog getter for open country.

I'm no expert but I would think that anything from the 243, 6mm Rem, 257 Roberts, 25-06, 260 Rem or any similar rounds would fit the bill. I'm a big fan of the smaller 6.5's but any of the others would work well.

I have a .204 Ruger for small varmint and a .257 Roberts for coyotes. The Roberts with an 85 gr BT at 3400 fps will kill any coyote at any range you can hit it.

Have used the 25-06 for 15 years now and it works awesome to 600-700 but it lacks the high BC bullets.

Coyotes are very small targets so utmost accuracy is also critical, especially at longer ranges.

Have a ruger target in 223 for squirrels and ranges under 400.

Im thinking 243, 243 AI, 6mm, 6mm AI,or 6/06 set up for 105 amaxs on the short side of things.

For 6.5mm I really like the 6.5/06 or 6.5/06 AI with 140 amax.

only concern is with these I see is barrel life.

I would do a .243AI or a 6.5-06AI (6.5 Sherman). If you want barrel life for plinking a 6x47 or a 6.5x47. You should get 1200-1500 rounds of good accuracy life with the first two and 2-3000 from the other two.

I have the 243 AI and 6x47 Lapua shooting the 105 Amax. The 243 AI going 3180 FPS with 51.5gr of Retumbo and 6x47 at 3040 FPS with 39.5gr of H4350. Both shoot under 1/2".

Looks good Woody.

Best I've done on coyotes was the .25-06 @ 420 yds. Impressed myself with the first shot kill. Nosler 115 Ballistic Tip at about 3120 fps and a 6x Leupold on the 700 CDL.

Jorey,

What would be the MAX range you want to shoot?

The 243AI would certainly do you well. The 6.5's will take you to 1K yards.
6.5-06, 6.5-06AI,6.5-284, or 264 Win Mag would certainly get the job done to 1K yards.
Still think the 25-06 or a 25-06AI would be just about perfect.
Keep in mind that Nosler will be offering a 257 cal ABLR in the future too. ;)

Max range 1200 yards...can always go further but realistically 1200 would still be pushing it and would only happen in great conditions and maybe a bit of luck :)

Thats why Im leaning more towards the 6.5s, as well as barrel life. I know the 6mms will get 1200 pretty easy to. Only thing I dont like might be the recoil from the 140s, maybe a bit much for coyotes.. Rifle will be somewhat heavy though as I like heavier rifles to begin with.

A .257" LRAB would be a nice upbringing to the quarter bores.

Still, will not compare to the 6.5s or 6mms unless they bring one out with at least a .525 BC in a 110g type weight.

You will more than likely need to use a single stack mag system if you go 243 AI. Neither one of mine feed out of the BDL or ADL bottom metal. I tried the A5 bottom metal with Accuracy International mags and worked great.

Like the idea of the 6.5-06 or 6.5-280 AI using 129 ABLRs or 140 Amaxs for the extra BC past 1000 yards.
