I have a stainless Vanguard in .257Wby and was wondering what people think of the factory plastic stock? Is it better to replace it or not?

boomer68,

How does the rifle shoot for you?
Are you wanting to change the stock for cosmetic reasons or for better accuracy?

I have been trying to get it to shoot and can't seem to get better than 1.5" 3 shot groups @ 100yds, so was wondering if it could be the stock.
Have tried 100gr TSX and 110gr AB with RL25, 7828SSC. COL has been 3.170" and 3.250", and same results??

A good stock is one component of an accurate rifle. The cheap plastic stocks on bargain rifles are not usually real good for accuracy, because they have a lot of flex to 'em. There are exceptions, and rifles equipped with them can be accurate.

For superior accuracy there are some good stocks avail. I've had good results from HS Precision, McMillan and recently purchased a nice laminated stock from Joel Russo. Have yet to try it, but it looks like a quality piece of gear. Good old walnut can make one heck of a good stock too - my most accurate rifle, a custom Model 70 match rifle, is pillar bedded in a walnut stock.

There are many reasons your rifle may not want to break the 1.5" mark. Generally when a rifle of mine isn't shooting well, I find it's me. After that it's time to check the rifle to make sure everything is clean and tight. Then play with the ammo a bit. Perhaps you could try some quality factory ammo through it, and see what that does? It's funny, but when I was a kid back in the dark ages, a 1.5" group at 100 yards was considered mighty fine shooting for a sporting rifle!

The TSX in particular seems to need a really clean barrel to perform, for me. Might want to try some ballistic tips too. They tend to be very accurate in a wide variety of rifles.

Regards, Guy

boomer68,

Guy has some very good advise. I would try some different loads. Do a search here because there are some accurate loads listed for the 257 Wby that may work for you.
If this doesn't improve the accuracy, then try a different stock. If you do, get it pillar beded for improved accuracy.

You can purchase the factory pillar bedded stocks like what is used on the Sub-MOA version of the Vanguard. Lock, Stock & Barrel has them about the cheapest I've seen, but you can check other retailers. They are made by Bell & Carlson, and there are numerous different varieties. I'd contact B&C first, let them know what gun you have, and they'll tell you the correct stock part number, which you can then order for about $250 delivered (depends on shipping) with either the pillar bedding, or perhaps the full length aluminum bedding block. Either way, it is the Weatherby design stock, which has the slight castoff, and the high cheekpiece. A great stock design, at least for me.

I have looked at them and it is the Medalist, right? Do they require fitting or bedding?

The Medalist stock is a true 'drop-in' if you buy the one for your rifle. You can 'skim' it with bedding compound, but I don't really think that's necessary in most cases.

A very well known gunsmith told me that he always checks a 25 cal with
the 100gr. Nos. BT. This is his go-to bullet to see if it is a shooter, he says
most of the time if it won't shoot that bullet, you have a problem of some kind. I believe you maybe should try that bullet before you start spending money.

I purchased one for my WBY 30/06 action...they are drop in ... the MOA went from 1.75 down to 0.75...also did a trigger job.

Can anyone recommend a load for the 100gr BT? I might give this a try first to see how it does. I am assuming you guys mean the Ballistic Tip, right?
