Vortex Viper HS 4-16x44

I've been looking at his one long enough and need to either get it or go on. I'd rather hear any comments if anyone has one before I do. With the BDC reticle I think it would serve target shooting as well as for those varmints.

I owned a PST and looked through the HS. Fine glass for a reasonable price. I could be pleased with that particular scope.

Vortex 4-16x44 Viper HS LR Rifle Scope

It's been hard to decided between that one and the Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20X. I have that one on a .243 and it's superb and seems to be only about $50 or so more than the Vortex depending on where you buy it and any promotions.

I'm sure if the Vortex can stand up to the pounding from a 30-378 it could surely take the miniscule recoil from the 22-250.

Good looking outfit. Are those the medium rings? I have those on another rifle housing a Leupold 3.5-10X.

Yes they are Meds - Lows might have made it but a bit of air space is ok and its does not sit too high . RJ

I mounted it with Vortex Med 6 screw rings on a Weaver 20 MOA rail .

Very nice! That'll reach out and touch them varmints...or anything else. :grin: One aspect of the Vortex I don't quite follow...the second focal plane reticle. Does that mean it won't focus properly unless you're at max magnification?

Most of the scopes you see are 2nd focal plane and basically it means the reticule stays the same threw the full range of magnification where with 1st focal plane the reticule enlarges with magnification.

I think you must be at a certain scope magnification for the BDC reticle to calibrate with your cartridge. Second focal plane is something else and I'll leave that to someone else to explain better than I.

What I want to know about is low light performance. How does it compare to either a Leupold VX 3, or Zeiss Conquest both of which I own.
How well do the reticles show up at last light. They look thin to me but I've never had a chance to look at one of these scopes.

The one I'm looking at has the VMR-1 MOA Duplex Reticle. I don't know if that one's affected by the calibration or not. I too have a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20X and no complaints with it. In fact, I thought of another till I saw the Vortex. I liked the idea of the 44mm objective instead of the usual 50mm.

I have two of the HS-LR 4x16x44 scopes. On a 270WSM and a 300WSM. Very happy with both for the $$.
Have had no issues with these.

Did you find the 44mm objective limited the light transmission any? Most all mine are 50 mm.
