Hi fellas,
I am thinking of a VX-III, 2.5-8 for a Rem. 7mm mag., anyone out there use this scope or know much about it. I currently have a Burris on it & I suppose it is alright, truth is I just don't like it that much.
Regards,
Jar Head
I have a couple of these scopes. For big game hunting, it is more than enough scope. 8x works fine on a 6" bull at 500 yds.
I sent one back to Leupold and had the M1 dials added. I have it mounted on my 338 RUM.
This scope is also available with the Boone & Crockett reticle.
I have one on my .222 and have nothing but good to say about it. Its a very bright and clear scope. For my applications, I would like to have something with more power and fine duplex, but givin the range limitations on the little triple deuce, it seems to fit it ok. I would like to put some target knobs on it though, would get me a little farther in range and I'd probly start packing it more for coyotes as its a very light rifle. I bet you can get away with low rings, but dont quote me on that. I use low rings on my rifle. I'm just using standard weaver style rings/base. Rifle is a Rem 700 SA. I just barely, barely have enough clearance. You may or may not.
With the low rings I would wonder when attaching it to a long action rifle. It seems to not be uncommon for long action rifles to need med-high rings depending on the scope. But then I mostly use Zeiss Conquest or Kahles scopes so maybe the Leupolds are longer.
Here's a Vari X - III on a long-action Rem 700 CDL - the scope is a 4.5-14x, with a 40mm obj lens, so it's bigger than that wonderful 2.5-8x you're considering.
I think this is a dandy combo and it's worked out real well. Low rings I believe. Hmmm might be medium...
By the way, a quick phone call or e-mail to Leupold, and they can tell you for sure. I'd get the low rings for that 2.5-8x. Really a great scope!
