First off, not looking to take on another build at this time, looking for a new production rifle.

Have need for a coyote and fox gun. Mostly relatively tight cover, would rarely see a shot over 200 yards. I often hunt off-road, either by snowmobile, 4x4 or on foot and skis so a light, maneuverable rifle is a must. I am hunting for pelts and have no intention to hunt deer with the gun so 6mm and up are out. I handload, and have a fondness for eclectic calibers so any of the oddballs out there are still 'in' but I'd prefer to avoid wildcats. Looking to keep the price down to earth.

What would you guys recommend?

A buddy of mine just picked up a Kimber Montana in .223.

Pretty much ideal for what you're doing. Very light and will kill fox and yotes to 200 with authority.

I've got a .204 Ruger, a CZ rifle. Factory set trigger, very accurate.

With 35 gr Bergers at nearly 4,000 fps, they go in and destroy the heart & lungs.... But they don't usually come out of a coyote. I'd think that would be dandy if you're hunting them for the pelt. I just wage war on 'em because the coyotes eat MY mule deer.

Of course any .223/5.56 AR-15 with a modest power scope would work just fine too...

CZ527 in 221 Fire Ball or 223REM Sporter barrel 3-9 to 4.5-14.

I have a CZ527-22 Hornet and I might buy one in 221REM and sell my 700-221REM Limited. Their that good and there is now a flush 3 shot magazine vertion in 223rem.

Hey, thanks for the replies. .204 Ruger was already on my radar. Was interested to hear real-world experience vs Wile E. Coyote. Think I'll look into either a CZ or Savage in that caliber or see what I can find used in a vintage Rem, Sako or mauser in the .222 rem, 220 swift, .22-250 or .223 flavor. Sorry guys, I know it's sacrilege, but I just can't own a Winchester unless it's an M1 Garand.

Found a Savage 340V at a local retailer in .225 win. That would definitely fit the "eclectic calibre" bill. I've experience with 2 model 40's in 30-30 that were very fine shooters with handloaded ammo. Anybody got experience with the 340V? The balance weight and overall handling fit the profile I'm looking for. What is the going rate for one in good condition? They're priced at $450 which seems a bit high to me for a rifle in good but used condition in a nearly extinct calibre.

I have been pondering one lately myself. I am thinking about getting a mini Mauser in 223 and rebarreling it in 6x45. I think that would be about perfection. I know a guy who hunts wolves a lot and he likes the. 80 gr hornady fmj at 2800fps as a perfect fur combo.

The light fast rounds still blow up cats and fox and questionable on larger fur bearers. The moderate speed 6mm bullets does well with minimal sewing all around.

Found a Rem 722 in .222 rem this weekend. Working on a trade with the guy currently. Thanks for all the opinions!
