Wby ammo faster than advertised?

Using my chrony I am getting much faster velocity on wby factory ammo than advertised. Thinking I did something wrong I have checked velocity 3 different times and have gotten the same approximate numbers. The rifle I am referring to is a .340 wby using factory ammo, 250 gr. SP which is listed at 2963 fps. Each time I use the chrony I am consistently getting between 3026 - 3039. The lowest number was 2999 and the highest was 3050 fps. Approximately a dozen shots taken on 3 different outings so the equipment is being consistent.

Using a shooting chrony beta model, which is level and fully opened and placing the bullets 4" over the eye. Yes, using it during good light levels with the screens. For fun I have checked other loads and factory ammo for different cartridges and got what I think normal velocity. Actually for some hornady ammo about 30 fps slower than advertised.

I've heard of some barrels being fast but this is a pretty considerable amount. Maybe I have a box of overly hot ammo? No pressure signs. Thanks...............chs

Yup it does. My 378 WBY mag does 3240 fps with the 270 Hornady factory

Be sure your Shooting Chrony is not in the sun when doing this. Mine reads 100+fps faster in the sun vs in diffuse (cloudy or overcast) light. I've proven it on the same day in the same field.

Norma loads the Weatherby ammo very stout. I had the same experience a number of years ago when running 180 grain loads out of my .300.

Weatherby and Lazeroni meet or exceed published velocities. Remington and Winchester factory loads are hyped 100 to 200 fps. I have never had a Winchester or Remington factory load meet the published speed that they advertise. Welcome to the Hyper velocity club. Weatherbys rule!

I think your in good shape Chuck. Besides, your a handloader now! No use in worrying about what the factory stuff does!

Thanks guys,

There are so many over-hyped products now days that when you stumble onto something that meets or surpasses expectations it makes you question it.

And Scotty...................when I grow up I wanna be a hand-loading jedi master like you! :>)

Weatherby does indeed meet or exceed the spec they advertise and few hand loaders (sane ones anyway) will ever beat it by much.

Remington and Winchester ammo is routinely under the published spec. In fact, I've got a 1st edition Nosler manual and one of the better features was a chronograph measure of common factory loads in various cartridges... darn few ever made it to spec...some were 300fps under!

I have that same one and still like to read it from time to time. That was a cool feature in that manual. Hard to believe they got along so well with so few cartridges back then!

Thanks for the info guys,

I've heard from a handful of other wby owners with similar experiences. It's probably a combination of factory ammo exceeding specs and a faster than average barrel. I guess it is something I will have to live with................

Another problem I've noticed with these darn Mark V's is that they shoot these little groups.
