What about a 270 WSM and a 130 E-tip?

How many have tried this combo? I know Dr. Mike has. My little sister has a late season limited entry bull tag and was thinking a lighter recoil of the 130 monos might be the ticket. Give me your thoughts. What combo is working for you?

As you indicated, this is my "go to" load in the 270 WSM. It has accounted for whitetail, mule deer, elk (both bulls and cows) and moose. It swats hard and drops game with authority. I like it. I would think that either the 130 grain AccuBond or the 130 grain Partition would work equally well.

Dr. what powders would you start with? I have R 17,19 and mag pro that I could begin with. what kind of velocities could you expect? thanks

I have used all three of those powders with good success. ReLoder 19 is the classic powder with the 270 WSM. I used this powder with the 130 grain Swift Scirocco to develop a good sub-MOA load that was very fast stepping (3424 fps and 0.6 inches). It was also very useful when working with the 130 grain Barnes TSX, though velocities were somewhat more sedate. Still, it worked quite well on game. MagPro was developed for the Short Magnums, and I've had good success with it in a variety of the cases. I did not use it on any hunting loads in my 270 WSM, however, though it is still a good propellant. My load with the 130 grain E-Tip is charged with ReLoder 17, which gives me 3257 fps and 0.4 inch accuracy. There are quicker loads that I have built, but this is more than sufficient for everything I've encountered when carrying this rifle. I am confident with the load, knowing that it will push through about any animal and it will go pretty much where I mean for it to go. I've had a fair amount of success with the 130 grain Hornady InterBond and with the 130 grain AccuBond as well. In those loads, I used VN 165, R 905, IMR 4350 and WMR. All gave velocities in the vicinity of 3200 fps to 3300 fps, depending on how hard I wanted to push them.

I ran some Magpro and 130 Interbonds and had excellent accuracy. They ran just shy of 3400FPS in my 270 WSM. If I were loading for the 130 ET's, I would have to try RL17 and RL22. Both of them, along with RL19 have worked really well in all of my WSM's.

Good luck, the 130 ET should do really well, but a 130 PT or AB should work just about as well too. Hard to beat the 270WSM with good bullets. It is still one of my favorite cartridges because mine has been a dream to do load work with.

Thanks Dr. And Scotty, very encouraging. What is a starting load with R17? Or maybe a quick load or something. Thanks again.

I'm getting the same velocity, but with 59.5 grains of RL17 (different lot and adjusted for my chamber).

Here is what Magpro, RL22 and RL25 look like as well for a comparison..

Looking at these numbers I might have to give them a whirl for my son. Trying to decide on the 270WSM or his 7x57 for elk this Fall as well..

I haven't played with any of the Vhita Vuori powders with this bullet; but I would imagine several of them will perform exceptionally well. I just have no problem with the RL17. From the start, it delivered what I considered good velocity and excellent accuracy. Keeping the OP in view, recall that three factors must be considered in thinking of recoil--weight of the firing platform, weight of the projectile and charge weight. ReLoder 17 confers a slight advantage, everything else being equal, by its smaller charge. Still, I should try some MagPro in my own rifle.

It's hard to monkey with what you have though. Seems like every time you carry that 270 around for long, something ends up in your truck!

Yes, but the scientist in me wants to know what would happen if I just changed this one powder, or if I just tweaked...

I know what your saying. That's what I'm trying in the 7 WSM. I have a great load with RL22 but just can't help myself from trying some RL25.

I like my loads like I like my wife.

Just one load per rifle akin to one wife for me.
