I will let you define what LR is for big game hunting for you, so give us what you think the max capability the weapon/shooter is for the game being hunted.

Sold my 7mm Rem Mag/Rem 700 Sendero some years ago. That doggone thing was quite accurate at 600 yards, the farthest I ever used it. Never took any game with it, but was purchased with that in mind.

Sold my 300 WSM/Winchester Model 70 "Coyote" several years ago too. It was flippin' accurate as all get out. I got a load from a fellow I know who shoots well in 1,000 yard competition with a 300 WSM. His load was a 210 grain Berger VLD over enough H4350 for 2810 fps with rather amazing accuracy from my rifle. The Jewell trigger helped. I never tried it beyond 600 yards either.

This is a 100 yard group with it:

I've still got my good ol' "Green Machine" 308 Win/Rem 700 with the Krieger barrel etc... Seldom shot beyond 600 yards. It still shoots real well. I'd hunt with it to 600 for sure.

My 6mm Creed... Ruger Precision Rifle... Honestly I haven't shot this thing as much as I thought I would, but yup, it's easily accurate to 600, and I'm thinking well beyond that. Not sure how far away I'd like to poke game with the little 6mm bullet though. I bought it as a range toy, but have considered using it for hunting in some scenario where I don't need to carry it much. Heavy rascal.

I'm not really much of a long-range hunter. I've taken game in the 300 - 400 yard area, and coyotes a bit beyond that. Got all hung up on the idea of long-range hunting 15 years or 20 years ago and was moving in that direction. But I'm just not much interested in it anymore.

My current rig is my 416 Wby

This past year I ran 500gr A-tip at 2600fps in it. This buck was taken at 185yds. May not be LR but on my steel at 600yds that puppy hits with authority.
Another of my hunting rifles I like is my 460 Wby

I never got a opportunity to take game with it , it to pounds my 600yd plate hard with 500gr TSXs and darn accurate.


I know many on here have seen my load work up with these rifles.

Custom Remington 700 338 RUM Leupold VX-6HD 3-28x50mm pushing the 250 gr AB at 3120 fps. Shooting 2" groups at 800 yards.

Custom Remington 700 280 AI Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x40mm pushing the 150 gr ABLR at 3100 fps. Actually I've use 120 gr BT, 140 gr AB/BT, 150 gr PT, 160 gr AB/BT and 168 gr ABLR. Everything in this rifle shoots .3 or better. My best group measured .056" with the 168 gr ABLR and everything I have shot has been DRT. Last fall I tried the 160 gr BT with excellent results.

I have two rifles that are set up for long range shooting . my first one is a 7mm-08. it's a trued up rem action , 24" broughton bbl , McMillan A3 stock , jewel trigger , NXS 5.5-22x50 . I shoot 140 gr Berger H-vld bullets @ 3080 fps . I mostly use it for groundhogs now . my longest was right about 700 yards .

a guy I know had groundhog problems at his barn . he asked me if I could get them , for him . it was a bad set up for shooting , so I asked him to sit with me ,to help watch for safety , while I shot them . he kept saying it's further than 320 yards , it's more like 500 . he had me laughing like crazy .




a couple of us got together shooting at a 1000 yards range . first guy would shoot , we would tape over the holes and the next guy would shoot . if I remember right I used a drop chart for my corrections , and no sighters . I had the wind nailed , but sure was high . still happy with under 6" at 1000 .




I also have a 338 Lapua . 30" bartlin bbl , tac 338 action , McMillan A5 stock , jewel trigger , NXS 8-32x56 scope . I was shooting 300 gr Bergers at 2939 fps . now I'm into a much slower lot of powder , the accuracy is still good at 2868fps , so I'm using it . I've shot our 1760 yard plate and was able to touch the bullet marks with my finger tips , I'll say it was under an 8 or 9" group .

My longer range hunting rifle, for me at 300 yards plus if I need to stretch it out a bit, is my left handed Sako AV in 7MM STW. It wears a fluted McLellan 24" stainless barrel and is fitted in a Fajen nutmeg laminated stock. It will put 3 factory Federal Premium 160 gr AccuBonds into a 1" group @ 300 yards when I do my part, and 3 of the factory Federal Premium 160 gr SGKs into a 3" group @ 400 yards. It originally wore a Vari-X III 3.5-10x40 duplex scope for several years.

It has accounted for 30 big game animals from whitetals to elk over the past 21 years, ranging from 15 to 475 yards. It has taken 2 unwounded animals over 300 yards; a whitetail @ 354 and a 7x7 elk @ 475 (which I had initially misjudged to be at 400, and later ranged), and one wounded mule deer at 350 yards. I did hit the elk with initial shot, grazing the brisket, and when he stopped after taking a few steps forward after the first shot, readjusted for the second shot making a higher double lung shot. Only the extensive practice at 400 yards allowed me to adjust my 400 yards point of aim with the duplex reticle which allowed for the second shot placement.
The rifle has worn a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40 B&C since about 2007, and have practiced to 500 yard .

One of the fun field practices that DrMike and I, and our other hunting partners over the years have done, while taking lunch breaks out hunting, is to find an area with long distance targets with safe back drops, and take turns guessing the distance and taking one cold bore shot from an improvised field rest, to see who guessed and placed their shots on, or closest to, that distant target. These targets could be across large openings, down cutlines, across mountain ravines, or across bodies of water. These varied openings really added to the challenge! Only afterwards would we range the target to see who's range estimate was closest. Fun and educational!

Here is some of my LR hunting rigs

26 Nosler XP-100 with the 147 ELD-M

6.5-284 with the 140 AB (Dan used my XP for his cow elk @ 680 yards)

7mm Dakota XP-100 with the 175 grain ELD-X

7 SAUM XP-100 with the 162 grain A-Max - My son with his buck at over 700 yards (one and done). This was Erik's favorite XP.
This XP has been rebarreled now and is chambered in 25 PRC

I have a few very nice long range rifles. Mostly range toys. The only one light enough to be practice would be my Christensen arms MPR in 338 lapua will most likely get some hunting time in the next season. I have a very accurate load for the 300gr AccuBond.

My two main hunting rifles have proven to be accurate enough to any range I would hunt at. I have two seeekins havak. One in 6.5 PRC the other 300 win mag. I’d be pretty hard pressed to take a shot over 500 yards on I wounded game. I shot a caribou at 519 yards one time, that is my longest shot on I wounded game. I did bat cleanup on a caribou at 657 yards that a buddy had wounded.

I’ve got several long range rifles that I actively practice with and hunt with. Almost any deer caliber 25 cal that can shoot moa can be set up to kill deer out to 600 yds. I have several rigs that I have taken deer out to 500 plus yards including 6.5x55, 270 Win, 7 REM Mag, 7 Wea mag, 30/06, 300 Win and even 35 Whalen. I set them up with Ballistic reticule scopes then confirm by shooting at the various distances. I prerange my distances and when a deer steps out I know which mark to use. All that said I will not shoot long range with a big cross wind. I will be working and setting up a 25/06 this summer to hunt with this fall as well.

runs a 140 berger at 3300 fps

Kirby Allen built rem. 700, 30" Lilja #8 contour, Rifle stocks.com thumbhole varminter, have taken a handfull of does beyond a grand, it now sports a 6.5x20 loopy mark IV, runs a 160 gr. AccuBond at 3575 fps using 110 gr. of WC872, about due for a rebarrel, chambering is 7mm Allen Mag.

RRA 8 twist 24" varminter chambered 223 wylde, reaks alot of havoc on groundhogs to 500 yards using black hills 69 gr hp loaads, has a 6x18 loopy up top

I have two rigs, a Model 700 which is original other than a MacMillin stock in .338 Ultra Mag and a Christensen Arms .300WM. I had a third Rifle, a model 700 with a custom 28 inch barrel (forgot the maker) in 7STW. My longest shooting was 600 yards at my local gun club. Both the Ultra mag and the .300WM were 3" rifles at 600 yards. The rifle that I sold (and now regret) the 7STW was capable of 2 inch groups with 160 grain Sierra's on a good day. What amazes me is the .338RUM has a stock 26 inch factory barrel and shoots lights out.
