What bolt face for a 35rem?

If I was to look for a donner rifle to build a 35rem on a bolt action what chambering to look for? I always though a model#7 or 84m would make a nice 35rem rifle. A short action with a 21" barrel should work great. The 35rem has a smaller rim diameter than 308 class cartridge does. How would you get a bolt to fit the 35rem for a build?

Wish remington would ran a batch of Model #7 CDL's with 21" barrels in 35rem.

Still keeping watch for a good donner 700 LA for a 35 whelen build. Hoping for that guy that needs $300 bad and has a good 270win/30-06 to sell.

I don't know what you'd use for that, but maybe one of two routes. First, you could start with either a 6.5Grendel or 6.8SPC bolt gun (6.8 is far more readily available) and see if the round would work within the tolerances of the .422 (6.8) or .441" (6.5) casehead bolt. But there's still a fair chance you're going to have to open it up a bit. So from that standpoint, the thing to do is start with a 223Rem bolt action (cheap/plentiful, compared to the 6.5/6.8) and have it opened up. Plan to have a Sako style extractor installed, as there won't be a factory extractor that will properly work. But any competent gunsmith can install a Sako, if he has the jig and knows at all what he's doing. Many do. So, now you're down to the only other piece of the puzzle to worry over - the magazine follower. I'd start with the 308Win follower, as it's pretty close. If that doesn't work, you might form one out of a 223 follower and some epoxy or weld or some such. A good gunsmith will also be prepared to deal with this.

Other than that, it's a new barrel, reamed accordingly, and installed on the action, and a stock. Those are the easy parts.

Alternately, you could just as easily get any short action, .473" casehead action, and build a 358Win. Load it down a bit and you'll have a 35Rem, or pretty much thereabouts. But if you're set on a 35, you can scratch that itch. For a price, of course.

As a final alternative, and I'm sure at a premium price, you can source a Remington from their custom shop in 35Rem:

I have shilen barreled 700 classic in 358win and love it. I was just thinking about a bolt action in 35rem and remembered the slightly smaller rim of the 35rem.

Remington has offered 35rem model #7's before but I think right now its a mannlacher which I do not like. Classic styling for me weather its blue and wood or stainless and synthedic.

The 6.8sps was made from the 30rem so maybe it will work if openned up some. I would love to see kimber make a limited run of 84M's in 20 vatrag, 221rem and 35rem. Throw in a 6 or 6.5x47 too! Or Remington or CZ.

Another option is, if you find one, a modern bolt gun in 7.62x39, as it has a .447" casehead, I believe.

But the reality is, if you just want a 35Rem bolt gun, the most likely way you will reliably get one is to get a 223Rem and have it opened up, with a Sako extractor installed. It won't be cheap, and you'll never get your money back out of it, but with a custom gun, that's usually what happens.

I'm no gunsmith and I didn't stay in a Holiday inn last night. But take heed of what he says in a "modern 7.62x39. There are a lot of I think small ring Mausers out there, maybe yugos I can't remember, but converted to that round and I've heard horror stories of guys getting them cheap for a custom build and it turning expensive with lots of extra work and a cranky 'smith, One in particular was in a .257 build.
My $0.02 adjusted for inflation in Obama dollars.
