I have a model 70 chambered in a 300 win. Mag, barrel is toast. Was thinking of a 257, 264 or something. N ot really a seven mag guy. Have 2 280s, 338 win and ultramag. Any @omments or info will be great. Mostly deer and bear gun.

The 257 and 270 Wby or 264 WM would be a great choice considering your other guns. Between them that's a tough choice, I do like the 264 WM and 270 Wby better than a 257 Wby but there is no wrong choice. You must have one that sticks out more to you than the rest.

Look at the bullets available. Though changing somewhat with the new ABLRs, your best BC bullets are going to be .284, .264, and .308. Though, truthfully, I'd probably be looking at a 7mm Mashburn or 7-375 Ruger myself.

Really little difference between a .277 and .284, especially given that you have a couple of 280"s. The 264 or 257 seems your only real option.

6.5 Remington mag just to have something different. With the long action you can load the bullets out long and use all the case space and with a 24" barrel there will be very little difference between it and a 264 Win mag with a 24" barrel. If you choose a 264 Win mag put a minimum of a 26" barrel. Longer is better. I have one with a 27 3/4" Shilen and it is a screamer. 3350 fps with 130 Accubonds and under MOA accuracy. Don't let the OLD PRESS about the 264 Win mag being a barrel burner. It is no more of a barrel burner than a 7mm Rem. mag. If you shoot either in long strings a bunch your barrel will be toast in no time. Treat them nice and keep them cool and as a hunting rifle they will last you and who ever you leave them to when you are gone very well.

264 Win Mag or 270 Weatherby would be real cool.. Love to have a 270 Wby on a Model 70 action...

Send it off for a rebore to .358 Norma, I'm pretty sure the barrel will have to be set back as well. However, that shouldn't be much of a problem.

270 WBY MAG would work fine and almost as flat as the 257 WBY MAG

Thanks...you came ahead of me :LOL.

Truth be told, with bullets suited for comparable purposes, the 270Wby is as flat as the 257, and offers 25-30% greater bullet weight.

6.5-300wm since you already have .300wm brass. I'm kind of partial to my 3 6.5-300's I guess.

Excellent suggestion!

Hard to improve on the 300 Win. Bullets available to cover any scenario you can imagine. Cartridge is accurate. The new ABLR should be potent elk medicine in either dosage. You probably have brass, dies, bullets etc already anyways my 2 cents.

Be really different and do a 7mmx26Nosler or a 270x26Nosler! Is it wrong to wildcat a cartridge before the parent hits the market?

Scott

You have already made your choice & it is a great calibre. But we can still suggest .
There is nothing wrong with a 6.5X284 :)
Just my thoughts.

Blessings,
Dan
