What cartridges have you used on Big game?

Wow. Many of these lists are long. Mine is longer than I expected. In fact, I forgot a couple and only remembered when I went back and checked my log of animals taken.

In addition to recurve bows, compounds bows, crossbows, and a 5.0 liter F150, my list includes:

16 Ga. Shotgun slug
12 Ga. Shotgun slug
.264 WM
270 Win.
260 Rem. in XP100R pistol
.44 Mag. in S&W revolver
30-06 Spfd
.30-30 Win.
7mm-08
7mm RM
7mm WSM
300 WM
300 WSM
358 Win.
450 Marlin

Okay, I was kidding by only listing the 30-06, but I did eventually come to the realization that Dad was right back in the 1970's when he told me that the only rifle a fellow really needed was a good 30-06...

I take it that we're talking deer sized game and up.

50 traditional cap lock muzzle loader
45-70 Marlin 1895
44 mag S&W 629
375 H&H
300 Win Mag
30-06 (believe it or not!)
308 Win
30-30
7mm Rem Mag
6.5 Creed
25-06
6mm Rem

223 - but with a caveat - all those were deer in town, either sick or injured. Not hunts.

Regards, Guy

That's about it.

"I’m not sure how some of you all decide what to hunt with!"

One must keep in mind, that we may not still own some of these rifles🤔...and then again, some of us might! 😎

As stated, some of us grab that new-to-us firearm that we haven't taken game with as yet, while others are waiting for specific hunts to use a particular firearm.
Then there are those days where we just can't leave Ol' Faithful in the safe and we take her because she is just fun to hunt with, luckier than others, or just begging to go!😁

Gee you're trying to get me in trouble, so I'll abstain from listing all calibers and say I have some I bought to use but they never made it into the woods those that have taken the most game is a hand built .45 caliber muzzle loader, 30-06, 257 Roberts, 35 Whelen A I and a 12ga slug gun.

Not nearly as long as some of you.

12 gauge buckshot
260 Rem
6.5x55
264 WM
270 Win
6.8 Western
30-06
308 Norma Mag
358 Win
35 Whelen
375 Ruger

My rifles in 7mm RM and 303 British were used by other hunters but I don't recall ever shooting anything myself with them.

It is always interesting to see how many use the tried and true cartridges to hunt with, and even more so when we learn how others also use the new, oddball, obsolete, or less popular cartridges too. And learn about cartridges we might not have thought of, or even heard of prior to this sharing of experience!
It's great to have such a variety to choose from! 😎

Hey Preacher, how did the 30 Carbine perform on game like a deer maybe? Reason asking, when I was a kid knew couple of guys that had them and used for deer hunting but don't recall them getting a deer with it. Weren't very many deer around these parts back then.
