I just came back from the local gun shop where I stumbled upon a Nosler model 48 custom sporter chambered in .270WSM. It wore a Leupold VariX III 4.5-14X40 balistic plex scope. What is this rig worth? The rifle looked to be in very good shape. They had a price tag of $2500.00 on it. I just dont know if I should jump head first or not... any suggestions?

Difficult to say...I paid a little less than that for mine new w/o a scope, but that was several years ago and the seller was pretty motivated.

Replacement cost on that rig is quite a bit more than what they're asking. If it's something they took on trade, it wouldn't hurt to make them an lower offer and go from there.

Shops that would give a guy anything approaching that on a used rifle are few and far between. Rifles in that range are slow to move as well, a lower offer to turn over the inventory might be accepted.

Is the rifle worth it? I wouldn't take NIB price for mine...its easily my favorite rifle and about the only one I hunt with anymore.

I'm guess its actually a VXIII since they haven't made the VariX in quite a few years and they didn't make it with a Ballistic Plex reticle.

The scope is worth around $500, and a new Custom Sporter is $3000, so I'd probably jump on that deal if you're serious about buying one. Of course there is nothing wrong with seeing how much they will bargain on it too.

I could be wrong and will be shortly corrected but isn't the 270 WSM one of the most least popular calibers on the planet? I am pulling some legs here but I seem to have heard that from several here. "Except Scotty"

Honestly I gotta agree here Bill. Would rather have a 264 or 7mm if its a magnum and would rather have the "original" 270 if its 270's we're talking about. Not that I need another one. The Remington 700 ADL in my gun rack is 270 enough for me!

I think my buddy finally got about 2100 for his with a vx2 3-9 on it but it took him a while we both thought it would bring more. I really wanted it thank goodness I never handled it I might be even more rifle poor than I am now

The 270WSM is a reasonably popular cartridge (at least up here) and has a moderate following among sheep hunters along with the 7WSM...

Not as common as the '06 or even the .300WSM...but "least popular on the planet" isn't really accurate.

Lot of guys who get one, tend to like them and use them on almost everything.

140gr AccuBond with a BC of .496 at 3100-3200fps, what's not to like? Not that a 7 mag or 264 won't do that also, but the 270WSM is in good company and can be chambered in a shorter lighter rifle.

Man, I knew you were going to try and throw me under the 18 wheeler!

I think it is fairly popular as it does stand out from the pack. It does just about everything the bigger Weatherby will do in rifles that cost the same as a 270 Win does. Granted, not saying it is going to take over, but it seems to have a decent following!

I love mine.. Maybe it'll have to come to Idaho this year. It hasn't been let out of the safe in awhile, so maybe that is why the spikes didn't show themselves last year. 150 PT at 3125 seems like it would work okay!
