Hmmm! By classic I think most used. That would be 30-30 or 30-06 I believe. The 30-30 Win 94 is the single most owned rifle so I guess that would be it. If it was post WWII I would say 30-06 and my choice would be Winchester model 70 in 30-06. I've never owned a 30-06 but it is the all around caliber champion.
 
I had one . NIB, It did very well with 165 Interlocks

A nice classic deer rifle my dads pre 64 M 70 feather weight chambered in 308 with a old leupold 3x9 vari x scope which is in my gun safe along side my grandpa's Hasqvarna 270 I got after he past away.
 
Put me down for a BDL in .270 win wearing a 6x Leupold. High desert muleys, pacific blacktails to north woods whitetails. Nothing sexy but it would do the job.
