What is your idea of.....

Those are a couple of sharp rifles, Scotty. It would be like shaking hands with JO'C to hunt with either of those rifles.

Classic? I see a levergun. Probably a 94. But even though it's only been around for 60 or 65 years, I'd toss the 336 in the mix as well.

On the subject of classic guns, We were duck hunting on the snake river. My friend's "new"ish boat is loaded down with decoys, mojos, dogs, guns, us.... we get back to the boat ramp and start loading up after a decent morning. As we're finishing, A little old POS boat with a tiny outboard comes sputtering up to the ramp with a couple old-timers in it. We chatted with them for a few minutes. They limited out and had a good morning. I peeked into their rickety ol boat after their lab hops out and see a bunch of dead ducks, maybe a dozen beater decoys, some empty 12 ga hulls and a couple of old Browning A5s. Everything about those fellas was classic, especially the guns. As we drove off my friend was commenting on the poor condition of their gear, boat, etc.... I was thinking they were probably on their way home, having a good laugh at our expense. But the sight of those A5s on top of the ducks and decoys with the empty hulls reminded me of images that were conjured in my head when I read a book written in the early part of the 20th century about fowl hunting. Wish I could remember the name of it now. But it seemed like these guys climbed right out of 75 years ago.

How about a winchester classic (pre '64 action) in 270 Winchester?

I think were on the same track.. I wished I would have waited for a Pre64 270 Winchester for my wife instead of the 25-06. The more I handle and see the Pre64's, the more I like them.

That is spendy man

They are Fotis, but I don't think you will ever lose a dime on one either. Not a complete nut on Pre64's but the build quality is very good for a factory rifle. I know having my Alaskan makes me wanna have another.

David, anytime buddy! Ha

Robert, actually the Marlin has been produced since 1893. Just about the same as the 1894

I know they are classic but no way would I spend that. I rather build one which I know will be a shooter.

Different strokes I guess.

The Classic WESTERN deer rifle:

A .25-06 or .270, walnut stocked, blue finish, by Winchester or Remington, with a 22" - 24" barrel and a 4x or 6x quality scope. Sight in at 200 or 300 yards and fill tags year after year.

That would be a sweet rifle, Fotis. The CDLs are handsome, to be sure.

That is a nice one. The recent CDL's seem to have a huge recoil pad, which I think detracts a bit from their looks and there is a strong anti-Remington sentiment prevalent these days which I think reflects a lack of quality from some of their recent products.

Nonetheless, I'd buy another CDL... This one has proven to be such a great hunting rifle for me on coyotes, mule deer and now on pronghorn, that I simply can't ignore that success. Also find myself loathe to change a thing. In the very beginning I adjusted the trigger, and after a season or two I replaced the 4.5-14x with the fixed 6x. Otherwise, I've just loaded it and shot it and filled tags.

Someday I suppose I ought to bed it. Or at least free-float the barrel. Or something... I guess.

Or I could just keep hunting with it as is, until the time is right to do a complete rebuild. I'd just hope that the glass-bedded, free-floated, custom barreled rig hunts as well as what Remington put together!

With the groups you're getting with the 115 BTs at 3100 fps I would not dare touch it! Heck I would write down the torque you put on the stock screws just to be safe!

More than a couple of $1000 Scotty! The one that I looked at (NRA 98%) was $4000. twenty years ago.

You aren't kidding Charlie. I think they are in the 7000 range now...

Savage 99 in 300 savage.

I have one, and it's a true classic, my first deer rifle handed down from my Grandpa. It still wears the Stith scope and mounts that he put on it when purchased new. I've taken several blacktails, cow elk and some grouse too! It doesn't get outside anymore, for the scope has the FOV of a drinking straw, crosshair reticle (emphasis on hair) and not exactly clear by today's standards. I didn't know any better when I was hunting it as a teenager.

I've been tempted to take off the Stith set up and add a nice low-power variable or fixed 4x, but each time I think about changing it, I convince myself to leave it how Grandpa wanted it.

As far as the classic deer rifle goes, anything outside the lines of a '99 or M70 is merely a subset of the same category.

Without a doubt Fotis. They aren't for everyone. I totally agree. To be honest, I wouldn't spend that on a 270 either, but you can get into a nice one for around a 1200/1400 as well. That is more like what I would have been looking for.

If I were forced to own a 30-06, this would probably be the one!

I did the Model 70's, got the t-shirt! I will stick with my 1949, .270.

That is a nice one and looks legit, even with beauty marks.
