What to do

Since I can't seem to sell my 300Wby and really haven't tried real hard to do it I have been trying to figure out my options.
Can I rechamber it to say 300 H&H or 308 Norma or should I rebarrel it? I'm not looking for more of a good thing but something I can shoot more comfortably.

What is it that makes it uncomfortable?

Which model do you have? I don't know much about re-chambering, but I would think that a new, higher quality barrel would be better.

I would have to think that getting a 300 bee rechambered to another .308 caliber (Norma,H&H) your defeating the purpose, the Weatherby is a pretty big case, to rechamber you'd have to go even bigger. :shock: ,,,, in a re barrel I do be leave that with the bolt face you have you could drop down to the .257 Weatherby, 270 Weatherby, or the 7mm Weatherly, or a belted mag "Normal" case, with out having to replaced or have bolt work done.

Yeah, rechambering probably won't get you to where you wanna be.

You could rebarrel to just about any .532" diameter cartridge out there. There are so many options and I have no idea which way you'd wanna go.

Shouldn't have to do much with the magazine in order to make it feed nicely as well.

zacii I have a Vanguard that I have customized with a new B&C Medalist stock and Timney trigger. The problem is the recoil is sharp enough to blur my vision and it takes a while for my eyes to refocus so no chance for a second shot. I've tried lighter loads but the groups open up so like most Wbys you have to load it hot to perform. I would rather give up 200-300 fps than have a detached retina.
So a rebarrel is where I'll go, I was thinking that by setting the barrel back a few threads I could rechamber it to something more manageable for me to shoot. For me less is better.

Ofcouse you could add an Accubrake but that will give a huge muzzlereport which nobody like unless that are deaf already.
However I believe a .300H&H loaded with a 180grain doing a moderate 2900/3000 ft/sec will still give you a "magnum feeling" but with less felt recoil. So if you are to rebarrel you could also ask the barrelmaker to make a slightly heavier contour to steady the rifle.

I'd put a muzzle brake on it in a second.

I have brakes on my 257 as well as my 340. They work very well!
Dad has one on his 300 and it is very comfortable to shoot.

However, I have a Vanguard in 300 with a B&C in a different color and yes, it can kick. I realized recently that just sighting it in last fall loosened the scope rings and shifted the scope. They've all been retightened and I'll try it again soon.

Otherwise it's cheaper to sell your barrelled action, buy a Vanguard in 30-06 (or preferred other caliber) and bed it to your stock. S2 Vanguards can be had used as low as $400, S1 Vanguards for $300. No way you can rebarrel for that price.

Some prefer those with ports on the sides and top only, not bottom, to avoid kicking up dust.

Have you considered a mercury recoil reducer?

If you do rebarrel, are you going to stay with .30 cal?

Vias brake and a recoil reducer in the stock will do wonders. Weight is the answer to your recoil challenges with this rifle.

Rebarreling to a 257 bee would be an interesting option too.

A brake may be the answer but than it would inhibit me while hunting or i would have to wear electronic hearing protection to protect from the blast. The B&C Medalist stock added weight from the original factory plastic stock.

zacii I'm not sure what I'll do but I would rather sell it than put more money into it, but I'm not going to sell it for less than I have in it rifle wise and is one of the reasons I was including the brass dies and scope mount in the sale if someone wanted the rifle. I've only put about 60 rounds threw it since I got it.

That's what I do. Not cheap, but they work.
I always use double hearing protection at the range anyway, with the in-the-ear electronic while in the field.

If recoil is a problem...step down to something like a .257WBY...easy enough with a re-barrel.

Almost all of the full length or belted mag cartridges like the 300 H&H, .300WM, .28Nosler, etc...are all going to have a pretty sharp smack when the pin drops.

A brake will work but comes with the negatives you noted. Maybe more cost effective to sit on it until you sell it. Barrels, brakes, etc... all cost $$$. A good condition used .270WIN or '06 is gonna be comparable money.

it would have to be a foot long. my friend that owns a farm I shoot on couldn't get over the muzzle blast of the 300Wby with H4831 and watching the leaves blow around 10' in front of the muzzle.

Fotis, I haven't broke down and bought electronic muffs yet but have been considering them. I take it you prefer the Peltor brand?
I also have been looking at the Grizzly Gun Works clamp on muzzle brake with a threaded on redirector. The clamp on could be used on the range and removed when Hunting is my train of thought. My biggest concern is if the clamp ons will stay put and not cause excessive wear on the barrel.

Rodger I would vote for the re-barrel in the 300 H&H it is just a cool calibre!! I always like the different as you do not see alot of the old 300 H&H around anymore.
My one investment this year is going to be good set of electronic ear protectors.
