What would you do?

3rd Choice- 300 Savage...just for kicks (or a 250-3000 for that matter)

That's a cool choice as well.. One of my favorite 30's..

I know my ideas are out in right field sometimes, but if I had a spare M70 SA, I would be looking at:
6mm
.257 Roberts
7x57
.284 Winchester
.358 Winchester
Or the Acklley versions of everything but the last two.

If you're looking for a gun for the girls, 260 rem would be the most practical option.

.257 roberts, 6,5 Swedish, 250 Savage, 7mm-.300 Sav (IHMSA?)or .300 savage would be really cool though. All classic or oddball wildcat rounds, loaded to book data are quite mild but plenty of muscle for deer to black bear at moderate ranges. .270 Redding would be another cool one (.270-308) as you already shoot that bore diameter and parent case.

A skinny barrel and a AA grade striped maple stock with some racy lines, ebony highlights and a rubbed oil finish would really set your project apart from the pack and make someone a nice heirloom.

Sounds to me like you're looking for an excuse to do an eclectic build, so that's the route I'd go.

I would swap it for a long action and build a 257 or 6.5 Swede or even a 7 Mauser. It will give you a versatile base that your children can shoot without much recoil but enough thump you don't have to worry. Besides each of those would be a great addition to your collection.

The Model 70 Classic should be able to fit a long OAL. Maybe just a mag box swap.

And wouldn't a Model 70, .257 Roberts, light barrel, with real pretty wood, be just a wonderful gift for your daughters?

Great for learning. Great for hunting. Mild recoil. Capable of handling deer easily and even larger game if necessary.

It could be one very sweet rifle.

I do like the idea of rifle for the girls. I have always liked the Bob as well.

Would the short action hinder bullet selection? Especially with heavier projectiles?

Scotty,

very rough measurement of 2.870 and it also has a .210 spacer. If I grind the spacer out I would have roughly 3.08 in magazine length.

That would be plenty Pat. Numrich's or any of the places you sent me should have a mag as well. That'd be plenty of length for a 7x57, 6.5x55 or a 257 Roberts. I have about the same length box in Brandon's rifle, and have 0 issues with space or having to seat to deeply.

Sell it and buy a Remington 700 Classic!

Well, yes, I suppose everyone should have a jack handle in the car, in case they have a flat.

Man, you guys make up a tough crowd!

Though, there has to be a reason that more 700 action are used for custom builds than any other action combined!

The .257 Roberts is 2.82 long. My ,257 Roberts I load to 2.92 because I have the full length action and magazine box. Setting OAL at 2.92 allows me to seat the 110 AccuBond bullet just at the base of the neck. Since the 7mm Mauser case has a long neck, you might as well use it.

I agree there would be plenty of room for the Roberts in your action, for the 6.5x55 and 7x57 there might be some factory rounds that would be a bit long but for a handloader it would work. If you like the Bob then that would be the one to use, it's one great deer and varmint round that could be downloaded a bit when your girls start shooting.

Ouch!! I'm going to stop reading before the pain becomes intolerable.

The 6,5 swede is just over 3" with most factory loads and all of my handloads so that would be a tad long. You could handload it to work but you'd have to work up loads carefully seating those long skinny bullets deeply. The .250 savage, 260 rem, 270 redding, 7mmIHMSA, 7mm-08 and 300 sav will have no issues. In the 2 savage rounds you'd be able to extend the COL beyond standard length and get near .257 roberts and .308 win ballistics if you wanted to.

Well a little something happened yesterday that has set me on a certain path. I found a new take off 22" Classic Stainless barrel in .243 win here in KC for 35 dollars. So I am going to have the gunsmith that was selling it install it on my Classic Stainless SA action, make sure all is good. Then I have a SA Walnut stock sitting in the stock pile that I am going to cut down a bit ,refinish, and intall a nice recoil pad on, and that will be my oldest daughters first deer rifle. Then when her younger sister gets old enough, she will move up to the Classic Super Grade in .270. I think it will be very cool to have all three of my daughters use the same rifle to take a deer.

Pat, that sounds like a plan! That should be a great little varmit and whitetail rifles for those girl's first deer rifles. The .243 should be a great low recoil rifle for those girls to learn on. I am always amazed when I shoot my .257 Roberts, how little recoil that cartridge has with 85 grain bullet loads.
