I have a friend selling a marlin guide gun in 45-70. he has less than 2 boxes through it. just wondering what a good price is.

I would say a 1895G blue/walnut would go for $450. Stainless would be more.

They are a great gun, easy to carry with amazing accuracy.
Post pictures of the "new" Marlin when you get her home!

I picked my Blue/Walnut up new for 450, on sale at the PX, but I wouldn't turn a nice one down for 500 either. Like Jim said, they are great handling rifles and really carry the mail in accuracy and power. Since I have gotten mine, I have a hard time not carrying it for everything. Scotty

so 400 with a couple boxes of ammo is a good price. especially since I already reload for it since I have a contender carbine and a 1884 trapdoor cadet model in 45-70

Jump on it buddy!
Since Marlin was bought by Remington, there are feelings that the quality has gone down. There is now a demand for the Marlin made rifles and the value is going up.
$400 would be a good price, provided the rifle is in excellent condition.

well its a keeper, Shot it yesterday two different handloads that shoot great in my contender 370 cast gc bullet w/ 5744 and 405 rem cl w/ re7. both shot to point of aim at 50 yards. eight shots in about a 3inch group not bad for a gun I had never fired before and with open sites. to top it off he is throwing in 6 boxes of factory rem ammo. I like how the 45-70 doesn't kick.

Glad you were able to grab the Guide Rifle. Sounds like it is a shooter, as most of them are. Never heard of many complaints of the accuracy of the 45-70's.

If you want some extra recoil, try H4198 and some 300gr bullets at full tilt. they get my attention! Scotty

its officially mine- got 4 1/2 boxes of federal 300 hp a box of Remington 300 gn HP and 3/4 of a box of 405 grn remingtons. So I think thats a pretty good deal for $400.00 7 boxes of 45-70 ammo and a almost new guide gun. figure the ammo is almost between 175 to 200 dollars so really I paid $200 for a guide gun.

Man, that is a great deal. You can't beat all the extra ammo. Those 300gr loads should work pretty nicely on deer and black bear! Throw some pictures of that beast up! Always good to see pictures of folks with their new Guide Guns!

Mike- did you get your 45-70 yet? scotty

No. I'm paying for several other toys that I've ordered. We still have a few months in this year.

Rgr, just checking! I know you will find it soon! Plus, with you doing load work, it will cut down on mine here in the States! Just kidding, I know you will like it when you find "the one". Scotty

You did well on that deal. Congratulations.
7 boxes of plinking loads is cool. You will need to burn them up so you have brass to work up with.

Since you already load for a Contender, you might want to color code your loads for each gun.
I use a magic marker to color the primer pockets for load identification as shown in the picture below.

Just a thought......
