Where are we hunting THIS YEAR?

The rain and cold are tough to get thrue UNLESS!! we start talking about our hunting plans and dreams. :?
We put in for the draw or ransom the grandkids for that once in a lifetime hunt. :shock: Or !! We plan something new and exotic and make the arrangements and start getting ready for the big one :wink: Now I understand that in my case that may be going up the left hill instead of the right one where I usually hunt but the possibilities are endless. We never know when that BIG buck, bull or boar will cross there.
Ok enough intrigue, I'm starting to hyperventilate! :shock:

The question is:
What new place, rifle, caliber, state, guide, buddy is going to make this hunt special and what trophy are we going after this time now that we know the "SECRET SPOT"and "ULTIMATE WEAPON"??? :wink:

Hopfully turkey hunting this March and Apirl on an island where the corners of Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi meet.

Well, I am first going to Missouri to hunt white tail and they are certainly bigger than the ones in Mississippi. Will be using my 358Win and also taking my 30-06. My friend has family up there and three different private farms to hunt on.

Then Arizona for black bear and I have two friends who are guides there and they will both give me one day of help and the rest of the 13 days is left up to me using the info they give me. I will be taking my 358Win for the narrow canyons and my 30-06 for the rest of the terrain.

Then I will hunt in three different places in Mississippi, two public land and the third private for white, hog, coyote and bobcat.

In January of 2010 I will be hunting in Louisiana with GB300Win (Jerry) and we are going to try and take those dark swamp white deer in the swamps and flood gas line right-a-ways of White Castle with our thumpers, his 450 Marlin and my 358Win.

I am already excited and thanks Greg, great idea to summarize our hunts for next year.

Well I'm going to be going to Idaho with a buddy from California GREG.
Using my new #1 7mm Mag for elk and possibly Mule deer. Taking my son with me if I can get him out of school for the trip.
In march he's going on the youth turkey hunt for St. Jude's children's hospital. "Hunting for a cure"
Than tn deer, bow and rifle, maybe a little bird hunting and some rabbit hunting.

If I get drawn for a tag I'm goin to Wyoming for antelope taking either my 300 RUM or 300 WSM Just hope I get a tag wont know for sure until July 10th Also might go to Maryland for whitetail deer in archery season

IF we get drawn for tags my son, son in law and I will be going to WY for Antelope this fall, thanks to you Greg . Will be going to TN to hunt turkey with my son in law in April. Then I will be after white tailed deer here in SC. Oct through Dec. Also plan on giving the squirrel a hard time with a new Savage 22 this fall. Looking forward to it and dreaming. I'm pretty much hunting BC this year, though I plan to hunt the Peace Country of Alberta (elk, black bear) hosted by a farmer over there. This will be a new hunting area for me, though I have driven through and surveyed the area last year. For elk, I'll probably carry my 325 WSM or my 7 mm WSM, each having accounted for multiple heads of game during the past couple of eyars.

Black bear on Vancouver Island, with fishing each afternoon for salmon and halibut will be new for me, though I have fished the Island. I plan to carry my Hawkeye in 358, which has yet to be blooded, and if it gets here in time, my Hawkeye chambered in 35 Whelen. If the Whelen doesn't get here, I'll carry my 350 Remington Magnum, which is also unblooded.

I'm waiting to hear if I got a grizzly draw in the foothills of the Rockies. Then, in the fall, it'll be moose, elk, whitetail, mule deer and black bear in my usual haunts, with the odd shot at wolves undoubtedly. I've talked about driving up the highway to hunt caribou for the past couple of years, so that is always a possibility. If I am able to do the caribou, I would like to carry either my 30-06 or my 270 WSM, neither of which has been used on game yet. I'm still working up loads on each.

Thanks for raising this interesting issue. I'm reliving vicariously some of my past as I read these posts already. When 260fam talks of squirrel, I remember some great afternoons in Kansas hunting the wily squirrels of that state. No one would think of hunting or eating the little varmints of this area. Whilst there are antelope in Alberta and Saskatchewan, they are nothing like those in the northern plains of the US. I think it is great that 300RMEFshooter is able to plan for such a trip. I had planned to apply in Wyoming this year, but it didn't work out for me. JDMAG, a hunt in Idaho is a dream for so many, especially since so many great videos show the country. And to have the possibility of your son with you on such a hunt... That is wonderful and a pleasant dream. Bullet sounds as if he is living the dream, if only he can get the 358 to shoot just a little better. This is a great thread. Thanks, Greg. I'll definitely enjoy the rest of the posts, I know.

I have applied for the Montana draw and hope to parlay that into a trophy mule deer hunt (if I can draw the area I want). Same for Colorado. Either draw or get a bonus point (MT) or preference point (CO).

Then I will motor up to Oregon and try for blacktail again.

I will be using my Ruger M77 Hawkeye in .300 RCM and it is not blooded yet.

Well, due to a potential to retire from the Air Force (start terminal leave in Dec), I will not be making my elk/muley hunt trip to Idaho. I will however continue to hunt on Vandenberg AFB for hogs, deer and what ever else is in season.

It sounds like a lot of good hunting plans and places and a lot of people are waiting for the tag drawings. JDMAG and his son and I are waiting on the Idaho cow elk drawing . If not it will be over the counter bull elk and mule deer buck tags. California mule and blacktail deer and hogs with a light topping of squirrel and quail are on the menu here in California.
I wish us all the best of luck in the drawings and hunts. Keep in touch about your results and new hunts . 260fan I think you're going to enjoy the antelope hunt and please take pictures. I was so engrosed in hunting it didn't cross my mind that I took no pictures of the country untill about Utah on the way back home.

It looks like you live in a hunters paradise, not taking anything away from Louisana, and all your hunts come straight out of my dream hunt list. Keep the stories comming for those of us who may never make some of those hunts. Hunting a grizzly bear has been my #1 dream for a long, long time.

Pictures were a bust last season. I did not take a single picture. However, I promise to rectify that oversight this year and secure and post pictures of the terrain and game taken. I grew up in Kansas, and I still marvel at the transformation of hunting in that state from my childhood in the 50s and 60s. I have the impression that many (dare I say most) states have expanded hunting opportunities due to the labours of hunters during the past five plus decades.

I believe you're absolutely right! If it weren't for hunters concerns there wouldn't be a lot of the game in a lot of the places, if at all, that we are blessed with. We'll never get the anti's and enviro-fanatics to even consider that possibility.
If we keep faith and teach in a posative, non-agressive manner I have found it not that hard to reach the unfamiliar and get them to at least consider hunting as the conservation based sport it realy is. Now if I can get them to try my elk and wild hog chili I can usually get a few converts right on the spot :lol: :lol:

Well, for elk and wild hog chili, I would be willing to convert.

I had a parishioner in one church that was quite vocal about his opposition to and distaste for killing "defenceless" animals. I took him, together with a few of his friends, shooting at the range on one occasion. It led to several hunting trips into the interior together and some great times hunting. Today, he is an avid hunter and hand loader, ranching in the Cariboo Region of BC. Patience and a willingness to hear what is being said goes a long way toward defusing much of the supposed animosity. He had never known anything but the city, and he had no idea that there was anything beyond that.

I don't know that such an approach would work with a doctrinaire anti-hunter because they have so much invested with those they are trying to impress. However, there are a lot of people who are just untaught.

I hunt north Idaho. Mainly in my back yard with my wife. The animals are really small here. I have been here 7 hunting seasons. and only killed 3 B&C and 2 P&Y bucks. Here is one of my online albums of what is to be had in my backyard
