which 1911?

Take a look at Kimber. Well made and flawlwss cyclin of any and all ammo I run through her. Accuracy is much better than I can do, with 1 hole grooups at 50 feet from a rest.
I have a Tactical Pro II and it is a joy to carry in the custom IWB holster.

I am far from an expert on the 1911's. To date I have shot about half a dozen different makes/models. From my limited perspective I have to agree with JD338, for what it's worth my first pick would be the Kimber, followed by Springfield.

I have a grand total of ................one 1911. It is also a Kimber, in CDP Pro II. No hickups or problems.

But like my Pastor says..."if you have 2 Baptists, you probably have 3 opinions". It's the same as gun nuts.... :wink:

This 15 year old Kimber was once brand new and good looking. Now it's pretty beat up. It's also been a great gun. Accurate and reliable.

The usual 1911 maintenance stuff needs to happen. Break them in with a few hundred rounds of full power, full-metal-jacket ball ammo. Keep them cleaned and lubed. Replace the recoil spring and firing pin spring every 1,000 - 2,000 rounds or so. Pay attention to the plunger tube - they tend to work loose over time. Replace the grips when they wear out. Use good magazines and good ammo built for reliability. That sort of stuff.

Mine is a high use gun no doubt. It's still perking along just fine, even the MIM pieces have held up well. I don't know how many rounds are through mine, but it's normal for me to put several thousand rounds a year through it. Sometime this year it'll have 15 seasons, at say an average of 5,000 rounds a year, that's roughly 75,000 rounds through it, give or take.

Yeah, my Kimber is a good gun.

Had a Springfield. It was a good gun. Had some custom work done on it. Sold it. The cop I sold it to complained a couple of years later that the slide had cracked. I didn't feel too bad for him, since I'd sold it in fine shape and gave him a great deal at $300 for the pistol. Heck, I had several times that much into it!

Some of the old Colts were real well made. Some were real clunkers. We issued a bunch of stainless Colt gov't series 80's and many of them needed the attention of a gunsmith to get them to work right. That was just to run! On the other hand my 1984 Colt is perking along just fine. I don't shoot it much, very pretty gun, a gift from Dad way back then.

Kimber is at the top of the pile of .45's available. accuracy and dependability are top notch. What are your planned uses, carry, target shooting or both. It sounds like you might need two. I have a pro carry II which is great in the accuracy department although its not in the target gun category. For carry it can't be beat. Give your needs some thought before purchase.

I've got a Colt combat commander that I bought in the mid 80's and it's been a great pistol!!!! If I was to get another it would be a Kimber. My CC is a Glock 36.

I recently found out a guy I work with has a connection and I can get one of these at a fraction of retail so I ordered it. Hope I like it :shock: I really dont need one but what else is new? :mrgreen: I am anxiously awaiting its arrivial from the factory...49 days and counting......

I really like Kimbers. I know there are others, but I am a Kimber guy. What can I say?

I'm a little partial to the real deal;

or even one built by Springfield;

I do have a SR1911 on my want list.

That is a fine looking piece you've pictured there. If only for nostalgic purpose, I should pick one up.

I got my new springfield 1911 :grin: . It goes bang when I pull the trigger :grin: What would you more experinced hand gun shooters tell me to expect for accuracy? I am learning on the fly :roll: :lol: Ive got about 150 rounds through the tube and it is a hoot :mrgreen:

I have a Para Ord LTC and a Kimber Ultra Carry. Both are great guns. The Para, for the price along with the quality of it is hard to beat.

I do not have the energy to row against this tide much but a caution! Stay away from the guide rod model, double sprung, 3.5 inch Officer's Model Kimbers and the Stainless on Stainless models. I had two of these and either one of these particular .45's would get you killed if you ever really needed them to shoot your way out of a situation!

They would not fire 3-5 times in a row, almost never, for 10 years and for about 1500 rounds each, despite running so wet that they stained all my shirts with gun oil. I even had incantation sessions over them to drive the failure and stovepiping witches out, it did not help!

I had many issues with partial ejection, stove piping, FTF with partial ejection, breaking springs and galling of the slide. Not to dis Kimber or their pistols, just that platform. These pistols went back to Kimber for work, came back "fixed" and did the same as before. One was even a "Custom Shop" pistol. No fabricator is perfect, especially on 1911's.
