Well I got over my big 35 urge and even passed on a 358 Norma with a custom 26" barrel. The 35 is just too close between the 338 and the 375 RUMs. Now a 416 8)
Learned Gentlemen of the forum: Which of the 416 calibers and rifles would you choose among bold actions? The possabilities are many and I've sold and saved enough to have a few choices.
I've owned a Win Mod. 70 in 416 Rem. Very nice rifle with a muzzle break. I traded it for the 7mm RUM XCR. I've been looking at Rugers 416 RCM in the Alaskan Hawkeye 20" barrel. I like the Rem 700 in 416 Rem in the KS Mountain rifle with 22 " barrel. (USED OF COURSE). I don't have experience with the 416 Rigby but I'm thinking they are in big heavy rifles. I'd like to stay below 8.5 lbs. A 416 Wby would be excellent except they may be a bit heavy in weight and surely in price. What do you think? I'm ready to pick and buy but WHICH 416 :? Or am I missing the big picture of what I should be looking for since the 458 Lott is gone? :(

Greg I cannot imagine owning a 416, not that there's anything wrong with that! I think that Ruger in the 416 RCM would be great or maybe the Ruger in the 416 Rigby just for sentimental value. At least I think Ruger still chambers it. i was going to say that the largest rifle caliber I have ever shot was a 375 H&H which I didn't think was too bad! It was more of a big push than a hard hammer like the 338 Winchester or my buddies 300 Weatherby are. They hit you like my right cross which hurts!

I completey forgot, both my SON and I got to shoot a 50 Caliber Barrett at Range day here one spring. One sporting good's store puts this on at a local range and a person can go try out rifles, pistols, and shotguns to see what they might like or what might feel good to them. We each fired one round of the big 50. With the heavy heavy rifle and the tremendous muzzle break, the recoil was about like my 30-06, but the muzzle blast was horrendous, especially shooting it under one of those tin roofs they have over the benches to keep the rain off a guy! I felt it on my face and shooting glasses and was glad I was wearing those and two sets of hearing protection, soft plugs inside ear muffs! It was fun though! POP i think you need to get an antelope with one of these! :p

A 416 rox but I am bias!
Gotta ask the magic question. What performance are you after?

416 Taylor
416 rem
416 Wby.

I know there are others but these 3 cover the different categories.

Since i had a 416 rem I like them but I keep hearing about the WBY and I miss my Lott and 30-378 so a Wby would be nice if I could find a used one at a decent price. I see one NIB for about $1800 on GUB Broker. I know you like yours. What do you think? Are there any to be had? And how do they shoot?
6mm The Ruger in 416 RCM is 8.5 lbs. it will rock pretty good with the 20 " barrel for sure but not like that big 50 you shot  This could be pretty exciting and a little scarey but
Thank You
Greg

My baby shoots .6 or so with the 330 HV at 3080 and 1 hole with the 300 TSX at 3125.

You've got me convinced the Wby is king. Now I just have to find one. If you see one you'd recommend let me know.
Thank You
Greg

Greg,

I think I would go with the 416 Wby. Flatter shooting than the others.

I have been begging for a 325 gr in e-tip and or AccuBond for a while. If we get one the 300 rum will have nothing on this caliber as far as trajectory goes. (more or less that is)

We use to have the Jensen (lost river ballistics) J 36 350 gr with a BC of well over .600. Warren Jensen's loads showed that 3000 plus fps were possible. And the bullets were the epitome of a missile. Like the e-tip but I with a metal tip.

I think I am going to give a good look at the 416RM when I get a chance for a true big bore bolt gun. I kinda like the M70 Safari Express! Scotty

I was half expecting Remington to come out with a 416 RUM.

That would make a cool wildcat cartridge, neck up the 375RUM brass to accept the 416 bullets.

The 416 rum makes alot of sense. Close to the bee and easier on the pocket. Brass barrels actions etc. When I say barrels i mean the lack of barrel mounted recoil lugs whivh some smiths will not touch.

Man, that should make a good rifle for deer hunting in your AO Bryan. You wouldn't even need to hit the deer, you could shoot in front of it and the deer is likely to fall into the hole the 416 makes in the ground. Then you could just use your knife to slit its throat. Probably save a little meat too!

   I think i will make it if i just get the 1895 45-70. One day i will get a really big boomer.

True, I guess I need to start loading some 500+gr bullets for the 45-70. Might as well see what it does with the big bullets. 300gr bullets in the 45-70 is like shooting 100gr bullets in a 300RUM!
