Which 416 caliber and rifle.

I think I am going to give a good look at the 416RM when I get a chance for a true big bore bolt gun. I kinda like the M70 Safari Express! Scotty

Them's my thoughts, too. If I can ever find one around home when I'm in the gun buying mood(well, OK, when I have cash) I'm picking it up.

It would be a tough call if they had both a .375 and a .416 Super Express, which one to buy first.

Same here BK! It would be a tough call for me too! There is a way better Nosler selection in 375 though! That would weigh a little for the 375 to me. Scotty

You get to go on a Cape Buff hunt if you buy a rifle that is .375 or bigger :) Atleast thats what i think will happen when i buy some kind of 416

FWIW, there are a few countries that require a .400 caliber rifle for buffalo.

Huge reason why I prefer the 416 to my original favorite 378 Bee.

I assume that if I can afford to book a Cape Buffalo hunt, I can swing $1500 for a new rifle and scope....

Yup, with the larger frontal area of the 416 over the 375, the 416 smacks a lot harder.

All you have to do is buy the rifle and you get to go  Thats what i tell my better half.

Dang, I better get on it then!

I found a Ruger Number One in .450-400 NE yesterday... For a mere $800... Am thinking seriously about it. Have utterly no need for it.

Boddington claims it's one of the best cartridges for Cape Buff, moderate recoil, and tremendous penetration. A 400 gr bullet at a modest 2,000 fps or so... Wonder if it can be loaded a little hotter in the tremendously strong Ruger? At any rate, I'm interested, even though a box of 20 Hornady cartridges is a crazy $108.00... And bullets alone are about a buck apiece.

Maybe... It would make one heck of an elk, moose or big bear cartridge. Let alone Africa...

Man Guy! Sounds like it would be just enough for those pesky elk! Any pictures of the case. Never seen one in person, but it sounds like a true thumper! Scotty

So when did "need "start counting for anything??? My 405gr, Remington bullets wern't that bad but that was a couple of years ago and 405's are probably cheaper than 500's. I really like my number one!! You could hunt dangerous game with it, like Black bears and the "big" lions, Cougars. I thought you might need my sage advice.

Might be kind of up your way next month to the Baverian Village! I am waiting for my wife to decide for me!!!!!

That great .450-400 isn't coming home with me. Too many other projects in the fire at the moment to justify another rifle - and really with my .375, I've got more than enough gun for anything I'll ever hunt anyway.

Regards, Guy

Well I don't know, things must be really good for a lot of you because "need" certainly is something I have to pay attention to these days. Gone are the days when I could just buy new rifles and cartridges to play with and discard for something else that came along. It has gotten to the point where I have to really be able to justify it. I can play with new rifles or go on hunts..............I can't do both any more. So I trimmed my arsenal down to the must haves and I mess around with bullets and I go hunting.

I surely had some fun with the big bores and did play with several different .416's including the Remington, Rigby and Taylor. All have their good points. I just do not have a need for big bores any more. I am not likely to ever get enough coin together to go for cape buffalo again, so my big bore is the old .375 H&H. I rarely need it either but it is nice to have in my hand when I am out playing in big bear country up north. Tundra grizzlies and the fuzzy white bears have a bit of attitude. :)

If I was to buy a .416 again, I would probably get something chambered in the new Ruger or go back to a Taylor.

Makwa,

I'm on the cusp of being compelled to make just such choices; mama just retired on Friday, and that is going to force some changes in family expenditures, undoubtedly. For the moment, I'm enjoying playing with multiple calibres.
