Which 44 mag?

I have owned a good many .44mags over the years.I currently have a Smith 629 -4", 629 Classics in 5" and 6 1/2", and a Redhawk in 7 1/2" with rings.I like the 4" Smith for a carry gun.I really like shooting the Redhawk off of the bench for working up heavy loads. The Redhawk will take the punishment as will the new 629 Classic.I like hunting with the 5 and the 6 1/2 " 629 Classic.I usually use cast bullets that I make with the RCBS 240 grain gas check mould. That and the 270 grain Lyman bullet.IMO they both kill deer better than any of the jacketed bullets I have used. The RCBS bullet with 22 grains of 2400 will get the job done nicely.Something about the flat point and square edges imparts the energy well.
If I could only keep one .44? That is a tough one.Probably the 6 1/2" 629 classic. Then again, the older I get the more I like the shorter barreled revolvers. There is a lot to be said for the ease of carry on a belt.Plus I can see the sights better.

.405, would you mind elaborating on which RCBS mould you have? I'm thinking about getting one for my 5 1/2" Ruger Vaquero.

I've been wanting to hunt with this one! maybe someday.

It is their 240 grain gas check SWC.I have gotten great accuracy with that bullet out of a lot of different guns.I believe I have killed about six or seven deer with it.

Hands down I would get the redhawk. I have one with a 7.5" barrel as do several friends. I also have a friend with one in a 5.5" barrel. All shoot extremely well and will shoot hotter loads than a S&W. A much stronger gun than the others you list. Mine shoots so well that a local target shooter wanted to trade me his tricked out 45ACP for it after he shot it. It is my favorite pistol. Killed a large black bear with it and several deer. It has open sights only. I did put the deep V rear sight and front gold bead on it. Love those sights.

I put the pachmyer signature(not finger groove style) on mine and lightened the trigger(a gunsmith friend did that). I like the way it shoots with the pach grips.

The Redhawk is a real Hellbender of a revolver. It was not till I handeled my new one again tonite that I realized what Bill Ruger did with his design.
I love the balance of the 5 1/2".If this one shoots I will never sell it.
I am really thankful after all these year to own another .41 that I consider the pinnacle of double action revolver design. My Freedom Arms Revolver to be the best machine work I have seen on a handgun. It is unreal.
I have shot the model 29 Smith until it rattled in my hand. Trust me, that won't happen with the Redhawk.
