Since I was curious about the load that I worked up for my wife's .243Win. Handi-Rifle, I took the Chrony to the range today.
The load that she shoots well, with very little recoil is : 33 gr. IMR 4064 95gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip, Win. Std. Primers and cases. OAL is 2.799" to 2.815" The Chrony showed the following fps readings from slow fire : 2736, 2728, 2635, 2709, 2691
I am wondering if the 2635 reading was a glitch, as I closely check the accuracy of my powder dump when loading?
Should I simply average out these readings to get the MV that I can expect?
In the end, I was pleased with these speeds, as I had guessed that they would be closer to 2500 fps.
She wiill be trying to get white tail and pigs in her sights next month. Should this load be adequate if she does her job well?

Out of curiosity, Steven, how far out of the group was that one shot? Did it significantly expand the group? That could be a clue as to whether the reading is an anomaly or legitimate.

I wouldn't hesitate to use that load at all. It should be perfect for deer and hogs. At that speed you should get excellent bullet performance. I would toss your anomaly and drive on. At the distances your wife will be hunting, it won't make a difference. Good luck. Can't wait to hear how it works for her. Scotty

It sometimes happen that "lighter" loads are not all that uniform due to the large amount of empty space in the brass.

Thanks for the responses.
Dr. Mike, the group was tight. No flyer.
I have heard good reports on the 95 gr. 243Win. Ballistic Tip, so I really do want to see the results in the field. I have been using the 140 gr. AB in my 7mmRemMag for some time now with very good, effective penetration and weight retention on white tail, mule deer and pigs.

I agree with what POP said on lower charge weights, and is the main reason I go with the slower powders listed. More often than not, I get my lowest deviations with higher load densities. But if your groups are accurate enough to suit your wants and needs, I doubt a deer will notice a 100 or so fps difference.
