So about 8 years ago I quit chewing tobacco. My reward was a $5.00 day donation to the hunt/gun jar. I need to spend some money. I have contemplated a 22Lr on a full size rifle platform for something like 50 years, but have never stepped away from Ruger 10/22 or light lever actions. In the $500 to $1000.00 range what say you? CZ; Ruger 77; Bergara? Something along those lines.

Oh - years ago I bought my youngest son a CZ with a varmint weight barrel in 17 HMR. It's a tackdriver still.

I should have gotten the 22 long rifle version as well, probably with the lighter sporter barrel. This was 15-20 years ago before CZ changed them. They were importing lots of them at the time and everyone I know who bought one was seriously impressed with their accuracy & reliability and just the general quality of those rifles.

In regards to Guy's post, when working on my commercial gig shooting all kinds of rifles, the most accurate 22 I ever shot was a Marlin Model 39A. The old rifle was beat to pieces with hardly any finish left on the wood and the medal was white for the most part. The owner had received it from his grandfather, and it was obviously used--a lot! However, that old rifle delivered amazing accuracy at 50 yards with about any ammunition I tried. I believe I took seven or eight different ammunitions, and all delivered enviable accuracy. I tried to buy that rifle from the owner but since it had belonged to his grandfather, any offer I made was a "no go." I have a Browning T-bolt that still takes the head off a grouse at 60 yards. And that is most satisfying each time I venture forth for "chickien." I shot a few or the CZ rifles, and they were a joy to handle, delivering acceptable accuracy always.

I have a ruger77 with the paddle stock and love that 22 used to even shoot hunter class silhouette with it, not sure that I have seen a new 77 in many years so may be hard to find one. I've not been around the Bergara's at all. My daughter's 22 is a CZ 455 Scout, it is a great shooting 22, the trigger could be better and maybe the 457's are, they also have the advantage of being able to easily change barrels if you felt the need. I like do like the look of the CZ's and their wood stocks that are out there and available now and would probably be the way I would go from what you listed.
Dr does bring up a good point on the Browning, always liked the looks of them but some almost too pretty to think about taking out, and Tikka could also be a good choice if you were wanting a synthetic stock.

Congrats on quitting 8 years ago. I know it's a hard habit for many to kick and I'm glad I don't like grainy things in my mouth, so I never managed to chase that fix. Many others, just not chew.
Regarding a .22, maybe a long barreled Henry? There are models that are more low key than the Golden Boy and they handle nicely.
Happy hunting in your search.

When I was a kid, 40 years ago, I bought a cheap Anshutz 22LR. It was cheap compared to all the other Anshutz rifles at the time. It doesn't feed great, even after thousands of rounds through it, but it shoots just about anything amazing. I can sit down at 50yds and literally shoot out a 1" dot. I'm not sure what the nicer versions of those rifles run now days but I would look into one of those as well. My dad has a older Kimber 82 that shoots pretty dang good too.

BTW I have a full custom built 10/22 and it won't shoot with my Anshutz.

Definitely thinking a modern bolt action, looked at the model 52 on gun broker, priced from $900.00 to 9,000.00 WOW!
Thought about the Kimber but they are priced a little high I think, at this point any way. Im just starting this project so taking on a big learning curve.

This is an easy one for me. But it's a pump not bolt. These Remington model 12s; with Octagon barrels and Cresent Buttplates are totally cool " old time" guns that will shoot.........

40 years ago the local gun club had indoor 22 shoots . Anschutz was top of the line , nothing would out shoot them . a couple guys bought Kimbers . they shot well , and won some . from what I remember , I think the Anschutz was the better shooting gun .

the guys I shoot with bought 3 or 4 of the CZ , 457 MTR . I bought a Tikka T1X . I replaced the trigger spring in my Tikka . my Tikka is smooth cycling the bolt , the CZ's are gritty feeling . we've never got together shooting enough to know what one shoots the best .

if you're going to look at Bergara , do some reading on them . a couple years ago when I was shopping , Bergara was known to have bolt problems . if I remember right , the bolts were actually breaking . I never followed up to know if they corrected the problem .

today I think the rifle that has a great reputation is the vudoo . if price is no object , these are worth a look .

I have a Tikka T1x 22 LR that I like very much. It has shot everything I've put in it very well, but really likes the Lapua Super Match for sheer grouping.

Still kicking myself for selling my Savage Anschutz .22 target rifle. Savage was the importer for a while and had their name on the barrel. I used it to hunt squirrels and if I could see a squirrel's head in the scope the squirrel was mine. I have shot Remington 40X Bs and other .22 target rifles, but none can compare to the Anschutz. If it had been a repeater I would still have it.
Fun thing about the CZ MRT is the stock looks a lot like the one on the Savage Anschutz, I might have to pick one up just because.

Now if you want pretty I came across these today:eek:...I do like the win 52 sporters too
Price is a consideration but that Kimber is nice. I would like to get my hands on one of the 52 sporters, look very nice, but a little pricey. Going to town today for an MRI, a follow up to getting tick fever in Africa two years ago, We’ve two small gun shops in town, I’ll see what’s available locally.

I shot my friend's Bergara BMR carbon, and its a great little rifle. SK Standard Plus ammo, at 50 yards you could shoot dime size groups all day.

Don,
Another one to look for if you happen to run across one is the Remington 541T-HB. Mine shoots Remington Yellow Jackets into a ragged hole at 50 yards. I need to try some match grade target ammunition in it some day but Remington Thunder Bolts shoot pretty good at 250 yards.
