hi,,,i recently came across a savage 270 winchester,22" barrel,1 in 10 twist,,,i'll be shooting 140 grain noslers bt's out of it for my first bullet try,,,i have always understood a shorter barrel needs a faster burning powder than a longer one,although 2" would probably decrease my muzzle velocity by 100 fps,,,my powder cabinet is full of like 8 or 10 different powders 4 of which are in noslers book,,,i don't need loads just a start off powder,,,the powders that i have in the book are,,,RL-15,,,IMR 4350,,,IMR-4831,,,and H 4831sc,,,thanks :grin: :grin: :grin:

................Aside from accuracy itself , if you are looking for more velocity, the slower burns or the powders which list the best velocities, regardless of the barrel length, will give you your best velocities.

You reload for a 22" er same way you would for a 26" barrel, a 20" tube or even shorter.

From the shorter barrels as well, faster burning powders will not offer the best velocities. They instead, will offer more efficient powder used to velocity ratios.

I would start with H4831 and RL 22. H4831 is the classic powder for the 270 Win.

If you want something faster, go with H4350.

Been shooting the 270 win for over 40 years and have never used any other powder than IMR 4350. As the saying goes if it ain't broke don't fix it :wink:

my results,,,went from 53.5 grains to 58.5 grains of H4831SC which is 1/2 grain below minimum and 1/2 grain above maximum in 3 round groups using nosler 140 grain bt's including factory 150 grain core-lokts,,,the core-lokts came in at 1 1/4 inch 3 shot groups,,,most people would settle for that out of a hunting rifle,,,not me,,,53.5 grains (11/8") to 56 grains (5/8"),,,56.5 grains to 58.5 grains started opening up from 7/8" to back to 1",,,amazingly i had no flyers,,,these were shot at 100 yards and 2"high of center which would make me good out to 300 yards which i can't even see that far away and would not likely take a shot,,,all shots were fired from a solid bench with a caldwell tack driver front sandbag,caldwell rabbit ear rear support,,,very stable,,,ya know,,,i hate load development (but love doing it),,,benchrest is to relaxed for me but it has to be done,,,relaxed meaning the scope bit me 2 times,,,after about 3-12 ounce liquid medication,,,it was very worthwhile,,,thanks for all your support,,,quickdeath :grin: :grin: :grin:

My 22" barrel 270 likes IMR7828ssc. While working up loads for it I tried all the normal 4831, RL22, 4350 combo's. When I tried the 7828 the 140 BT's were all touching at 100 yds. 2940 fps, no pressure signs and all touching, I just found my load! It doesn't hurt that I have 8 lbs of this to use up either as my 300 Wby likes RL25.

For a change of pace, try N560. It turned my Browning 1885 270 into a genuine one holer (3 shots).

I'm with you, Elkman, I have been loading IMR 4350 into my .270's for nearly 50 years and it works so well that I can't think of changing.
