Who has worked with Re16 already? What about QL??

I laid in an 8-pounder the other day thinking I'd like to see how it does in my .35 Whelen shooting 225 Accubonds. It seems as though there's just not a lot of data out there.

I'm thinking that since it is a slower burning number than Re15 is, and I'm shooting a lightly compressed load of Re15 already, I should be able to stuff the case chock full of all the Re16 I can get in there and be safe. To be safe I'd start a little lighter, though...no sense taking unnecssary chances.

I have not bought a QL update for quite some time, and I was wondering if Re16 or any of the newer IMRs are in the database yet. Can anyone verify one way or the other?
 
Thanks Kraky. I think I'll definitely try it in .30-06 with 180 Partitions, but I'll think more on the 225s in .35 Whelen---unless another Whelen shooter has already figured it out. Don't wanna reinvent the wheel!

I get higher velocity out of CFE223 and good accuracy to boot in my 35 Whelen/AI. I think it falls between RL16 and RL15 in the burn rate charts.

I notice that Re15 is not showing up in that powder profile, which is disappointing. I was hoping to make a direct comparison.

Truck driver, was it you who had played with Re17 in the Whelen some time back? Or was that someone else?
 
Yep I played with it but you can't get enough in a case to get the velocity out of it. so far CFE223 has been very impressive out of the 35 Whelen /AI though I haven't tried it in the standard yet I think it would work better than RL15 JMO of course but I have found IMR8208 to work well with the 200gr ABs in the 35 Whelen.
I must admit that most of my experimenting has been in the AI case which seems to impress me. If my M700 classic had a longer barrel than 22" I would have already had it rechambered to the AI version.
 
That's what I was thinking about Re17...so I never tried it. I'm not keen on 17 anyway, too much variation with temperature. I'm thinking I won't be able to get enough Re16 in the case either since I can barely get enough Re15 in the case to approach maximum pressure and velocity.

I may go ahead and try Re16 in the Whelen, but I think my best prospect is the .30-06 with 180 Partitions. It might work well in .280 with 150 Partitions also, but I'm not finished playing with Re26 in that combination as of yet. I haven't even begun to think about Re23 for the .280...there are just too many new powders out there right now!

Dwh, are you speaking of the latest update disc, or a new QL v3.9 installation? I've never been real sure just exactly what I've been getting as I update my original installation, which is 3.6. My last update was a 2015 update disc.
 
My buddy runs RL17 in his Whelen and gets incredible speed and milder PSI than what I see with 15. It didn't look possible with QL but it works.

I'd be very interested in seeing what 16 does. 15 has always been perfect with 225-250's in my Whelen.

I might have a 350 Rem Mag to try it in as well...

Mine says 3.8 in the "about" portion.
I just updated, or received a disk, about a month ago.



And Scotty....350 Rem Mag????? Now I'm interested :grin: :grin:
