I found a really cool 99 in 300 savage, and the guy who had it , is a guy I have delt with before and agreed to hold it for me.
I am not real knowlagable on 99s but I know i like this one, and what else do I need to know !
It has an excelent old redifield reciever sight. and a gold blade front that really jumps out at you. My under standing is the rear sight is factory and that adds an s to the model number adding value. All I know is if I can learn to squirt a mag full of bullets into a paper plate at 100 yards I will be ready to hunt.
It was made in 1946. Did not get a barrel length, and i really have no preference, as with the peep sight I can't see me ever shooting over about 150 yards with it any way.
So any body have a 300 save experience to share. ?
classic rifle, got to be a few savage shooters here. I notice in a couple of my books, the 165 grain load only picks up about 55, or so FPS over the 150s. making the 165s the obvious choice.
But if your experience is different by all means straiten me out !

That was my first hunting rifle. It was my Grandpa's. All I shot through it was factory Remington 150gr until I started reloading. My load is a 180gr Speer Mag tip over RL-15. It has taken many animals. The last animal was a large cow elk taken by my son. He shot her at a rather steep quatering away angle. In the timber she looked like she was quatering-to. The bullet entered the hip area and, to my surprise, exited the opposite armpit.

I think the 165gr is a great way to go. This load just shot very well in my rifle, so I stuck with it. Remember that the velocity of the 300 Savage is not overwhelming, so the use of a soft bullet that opens up is crucial. For shots under 150yds, find an accurate load and hunt with it.

I had a 99 and had built a bunch of loads for the 300 Savage. Interesting little round.

I have one, a hand-me down, Grandpa gave it to Dad, then I asked for it. I shot my first big game animal with it. This is one gun that I will not part with.

As for loading ammo for it, I found that the new modern bullets are a bit longer than the older stuff. For instance, look at the lengths of a 150 Partition, BT, and AB. I load up some 150AB and ended up have a compressed load due to seating that bullet deep enough to fit/work in the rotary magazine. I am now working a load up using the 150PT, much easier to work with.

Ditto! I have a 300 Savage that my grandpa bought new in the '50s. My Dad killed some great dear with it and I killed my first deer with it. It has sat in the safe for many years now, but someday my son will use for his first deer. Like richracer, I will never part with it until my son takes it over.

i had 2, gave the scoped 300 to my stepson. shot a couple deer and coyotes with it. 125gr ballistic tip at 3050fps. the perfect bullet for the 300 with a scope. for my open sighted 300. i have a couple loads i developed. 150gr Partition at 2650fps, matches the factory rem 150gr i cronographed. the load i'll probably use first is the 170gr Partition load at 2400fps. i cronographed the 180gr remington 300 savage load, 2225fps. with open sights i can shoot 2 1/2" groups at 100yds. so high performace loads are not needed. i can not see well enough to need them.
