Why have multiple rifles of same caliber?

She asked me a while ago "Why do you need [insert whatever gun I was buying at the time in this space]???"

My response: "Ha! I'm so far past 'need' I can't even see it in the rear-view mirror....I just would like to have this one." (And many others.)

Great response!

As I've often said, the best thing my wife ever told me with regard to this hobby is that she didn't want to know anything about what firearms I bought, sold or owned, or how many there were in the house.

Needless to say that did nothing to slow down the acquisitions.

Just remember not to piss the lady of the house off too much. For if she doesn't know how to use a gun properly it may be turned into a improvised club.

I'm pretty sure my wife can't count past 6....that's the number when she quit hassling me about new ones.

I also buy more used ones so when she sees me walking through the door and asks, "Is that a new gun?" I can look her dead in the eye and say- "Nope- this is an old one."

My wife has mentioned a 4th child more frequently lately (three daughters here, ages 10, 7, and 1). I suggested a 2nd Labrador and a few more guns would be FAR cheaper.

Good answer. I took the bullets out of that gun so she couldn't change her mind about more. Mine are 21 month and 8 months.

That is funny right there.

Hodgman and Tom,

Those are gutsy moves on your parts. I salute you, gentlemen.

I gotta fess up....that was just hyperbole. I got it way worse than you guys- my wife is a shooter.

She sees a new rifle going through the house and she'll look and me and say - "That had better be another .270 for me!"

Well, since it is time for true confession, I'll admit that my wife is pretty good about tolerating my predilection to new rifles. She doesn't necessarily enjoy seeing me come in with a new rifle, but she doesn't say much. Then, again, when we just got a new fridge and dishwasher, I was wise enough to be quiet. And when the new living room suite was ordered, I mentally calculated that it was roughly one new rifle in exchange. Then, she is remodelling the fireplace this summer. I'm pretty certain that will allow me at least one new rifle.

Yeah thats what I love about how Larry Potterfield's wife always comes out wearing a different pair of shoes when she asks him if he really needs another gun (treestand, trail cam, rangefinder, etc.) on the MidwayUSA commercials. Cracks me up!

The labrador and the guns might not be near as much fun!!!

I don't know how I missed this earlier,,,,,,anyhow.
I not sure of how someone else, 5 of same caliber or even same chambering is rationalized,,,,but.
I have 2 in the same caliber, but can see end use's for more. I can rationalize more than I have in 1 load per rifle, under different parameters. That would be hunting guns, and just not more a collection type of a favorite whatever.
Parameter's being rifle length, bullet weight/design, range, power level, and animal size. Then throw in strictly a target rig.
I do like a carbine, and then rifle length, for different ranges and terrains myself for 2 rigs (timber/open). But I could easliy make that four, if I didn't go a tad heavy bullet for caliber. Making it more animal size specific, those could easily made into 4 guns with bullet weight/design choices in mind. Then throw in a F-Class, or one more set up the tactical mode, makes it 5 possibly even 6.

There are plenty of niches to be filled in my life including more than one cartridge in a given caliber. They all start with "I want this." and have no real reason for existing, except that they exist at my place.

Talked to a friend last night and when I suggested that I really didint NEED the 243 he replied, "When my wife asks why I "need" that I repy, honey we are far beyond the point where we "need" anything any more. I "want" it and you and I arent going to be cold or hungry if I have it." CL

Exellent response and point!!!

Over the years I sure have had a lot of rifles in .30 cal:

.30-30, Win, Marlinx2
.308, Rem 700, Win 70, Browning BLR
.30-06, M1917 Win, Rem 700 carbine (that was a neat, early 700), 721
.300 WSM, Model 70
.300 Win mag, Ruger 77, Win 70, Ruger Number One
.300 Rem Ultra Mag, Rem 700

Likely missed some... These days all I have is:

.30-30 Win, Marlin/Glenfield
.308 Win, Rem 700 "Green Machine"
.30-06 Win M1917
.300 WSM

Still, that's four good .30 cal rifles.

Father-in-law had a neat little .30 carbine that I worked over for him. One of his sons has it now and treasures it as a memory of his father. That's cool.

Rifles come and go. I went through quite a period there when I was buying, selling and trading rifles like Fotis! Well, not quite that bad.

Guy

I am like Guy, I have had a couple or three .30 calibers in the house at the same time and have owned several, .30 Carbine, .30-30, .300 Savage, .308, .30-06, .300 H&H and .308 Norma Mag rifles (and maybe others) over the years
