Why is it.......

While in High School I worked in an Acme Super Market as a teller and did everything else also, I was taught to rotate stock on shelves putting the new stock in the rear and moving the old stock forward, to this day when I shop I check the code dates and pick the product which has the longest shelf code.
I want the freshest product I can buy, that's probably what your wife is doing also.

I have seen the shelfs stocked this way and do pick the freshest milk dates. I see people pick the back items without looking at dates. Guess they just know from experience or maybe it just speaks to them.

.... I hate to say this, because I am all for the principle of what you are saying here, but most things I buy when I actually go to the grocery store, or am picking up beer... I grab the far back one. I don't trust the world, people get into some nasty stuff and don't wash their hands, people are messed up.. the stuff that has been handled the least is more appealing to me and in some cases it may be a day or two more fresh.. but it's more about it hasn't been messed with.

I'm not sure which is worse, admitting I was buying spring mix for a salad or digging to the back to find the ones most recently put out. But there it is. Tell your friend.

I buy a lot of groceries, and in my case I am typically going to look a lot like the women when selecting items. Find the cans with good dates and no dents, pick the tomatoes with good color, and texture, make sure the bread will last past tomorrow. I feel like I translated the carefull selection process I used when picking out Hotwheels cars as a kid over to grocery shopping. When you buy a Hotwheels car you have to make sure the axles are straight, the wheels don't touch the frame, there is not excessive plastic flashing anywhere... yeah, I'm a meticulous person.

The thing is, there is nothing more frustrating than buying food, taking it home to make a meal, and then finding that it was bad and throwing it out. Such a waste right? And now what is for dinner?! Especially if you shop at Walmart, which is often my only option, it pays to double check everything.
